VẤN ĐẠO TẠI THIỀN ĐƯỜNG BOTHELL - Cuốn A&B
Đức Thầy-1: Con chỉ tự tu Con mới tìm ra cái nhân đạo ở đâu và nhân nghĩa ở đâu. Khởi điểm tốt mới gặt hái được điểm tốt, mà khởi điểm xấu thì gặt hái xấu mãi mãi.
Ông Tám đã nói, ra đời sát rồi! “Giết con gà cúng cho con tôi được bình an”! Bình an ở chỗ nào?
Đức Thầy-4.5: Ừ;
Bạn Đạo-4.6 Vì lúc đó là con còn nhỏ quá, chỉ nghe cha mẹ thuật lại thôi. Người dượng rể của con có làm một cái am ở trong rừng;
Đức Thầy-4.6: Ừ;
Đức Thầy-4.7: Ừ;
Bạn Đạo-4.8: Thì con cọp nó về mé bên kia kìa, để nghe kinh!
Đức Thầy-4.8: Ừ;
Bạn Đạo-4.9: Khi nghe xong thời kinh thì con cọp đi;
Đức Thầy-4.9: Ừ;
Đức Thầy-4-10 : Ừ;
Bạn Đạo-4.11: Dạ;
Chay, mặn do tâm!
“Hồi nhỏ, ổng yêu mà đẻ thằng quỷ này, nó khó chịu quá!” (cười) Phải không?
Tại sao đẻ thằng quỷ, thấy khó chịu quá? (cười). Tại yêu đó! I, Ê, U đó!
Đức Thầy-24.1: Anh hưởng thì có gương lành thôi;
Đức Thầy-28: Niệm là niệm cho có trật tự: Phật cũng như là con cưng của Cha;
Bạn Đạo-29: Có một người hỏi con, mà con không biết trả lời;
Đức Thầy-29: Ừ ?
Bạn Đạo-29.1: … thí dụ như mình niệm tới chỗ, “Cực Lạc Thế Giới Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát”; rồi mới tới “Nam Mô Long Hoa Giáo Chủ”.
Bạn Đạo-29.1: Dạ;
Bạn Đạo-34: Dạ;
Bạn Đạo-35: Dạ;
Còn đường mình, mình tầm; chấp thuận hay không là do mình, chớ đâu phải do họ!

SPIRITUAL QUESTIONS
AT THE BOTHELL MEDITATION HALL – Volumes A & B
Mr. Tám-1: Only by practising on your own will you discover where true humanity lies and where righteousness lies. A good beginning yields good results, whilst a bad beginning yields nothing but evil forever.
Mr Tam said, ‘It’s murder from the start!’ ‘Kill the chicken as an offering so my child may be safe!’ Safe in what sense? You’re just creating evil! Growing up, getting married—people still host five or three banquets, or even dozens it’s still slaughter! People die in droves, with wailing and chaos all around, yet they don’t realise it! Just sitting there drinking and feasting for their own pleasure!
There’s no pleasure in that! Taking pleasure in others’ sufferingwhat’s there to enjoy? Isn’t that so?
A person of reason must consider this: taking pleasure in the suffering of others—what is there to enjoy?
Vô Vi Friend-1: I see my parents often doing things, continuing to make mistakes. I don’t want to remain silent, but I’ve never dared to speak up.
Mr. Tám-1.1: How can you speak up! Even if you speak, they won’t listen!
Vô Vi Friend-1.1 Yes, I realise that.
Mr. Tám-1.2: You must remain silent and focus on your spiritual practice; then, perhaps one day, when they see the radiant glory of the Son, only then will your parents listen. But if you speak now, your parents will say, ‘You’re in darkness—what on earth are you talking about?’ Isn’t that right?
Vô Vi Friend-1.2: Yes.
Mr. Tám-2: You must realise that strength lies in compassion! Do you remember?
Vô Vi Friend-2: Yes.
Mr. Tám-3: Even a dog can learn compassion.
Vô Vi Friend-3: Yes.
Mr. Tám-3.1: Where does compassion lie?
It is that the person has cared for the dog; the dog is always grateful to that person; even if they have known each other for just a minute or an hour, it remains affectionate. Do you see?
Vô Vi Friend-3.1: Yes.
Mr. Tám-3.2: There you go! Therefore, the power of compassion is boundless. But let us reflect: if we examine ourselves, are we right or wrong? Do we possess compassion?
Vô Vi Friend-3.2: Yes.
Mr. Tám-3.3: Ah! (inaudible…) Then we must strive to repent and practise compassion; learn compassion and practise compassion. Well, the dog shows us a good lesson: that is, if you keep a dog, no matter how much you beat it, when you comes home, it still wags its tail and is happy to see its master! Do you see?
Vô Vi Friend-3.3: Yes.
Mr. Tám-4: It never gets angry with its master; that dog! Therefore, the longer one keeps a dog, the more affectionate it becomes. It is wise; it is human, after all! It is merely a sinful soul, and it wishes to repent so it may return to a human life; it yearns intensely to be human; that dog! So, with its willpower, wisdom, and willingness to serve and repay its master, it won’t be long before it returns to human form.
So, they are all sinful souls.
That is why I say that whichever animal you look at closely and speak to with kindness, if you wish to talk to it, it will be overjoyed! You see, even a tiger, people can tame it, they can teach it; do you see? Its very nature knows how to love: it has a mate; it knows how to live! Isn’t that so?
Vô Vi Friend-4: Yes.
Mr. Tám-4.1: There are many tigers that are vegetarian; they do not eat meat.
Vô Vi Friend-4.1: Yes.
Mr. Tám-4.2: They do exist in the forest, it’s not as if they don’t!
Vô Vi Friend-4-2: Yes, they do!
Mr. Tám-4.3: People call them ‘Mr Tiger!’ Ah! People are surprised that even wild animals can practise spiritual cultivation!
Vô Vi Friend-4.3: Yes.
Mr. Tám-4.4: But do not say that animals do not practise spiritual cultivation, and kill every animal you come across! That is a sin! Do you understand?
Therefore, strive to practise the Vô Vi spiritual path to discover many things. When you astral project into the realm where animals practise, you will see that their practice is far from complete! They practise so that their bodies may clearly become human; only their minds remain ignorant; by retaining the mind of an animal for a time, they evolve to perfection and return a human being. It also works like other sentient beings; there are many such stages one must pass through!
Those practising the Vô Vi spiritual path who are permitted to go there will all pass through that place to observe and learn; to learn about the reunion of human life: through the animal realm, through the human realm, and only then will they clearly recognise this truth.
Therefore, in due course I shall endeavour to translate the ‘Journey Through Reincarnation’, to clearly show that animals are human beings; they coexist with us on this Earth, just as birds and all manner of creatures also live alongside us on this Earth! They, too, possess the five viscera and the four senses: ears to hear, eyes to see, a nose, a mouth—all complete, just like us; but they are confined to a smaller scope, though their capabilities are fierce, not ordinary! When we provoke them, they bite back! Even a chicken will bite a human; don’t you see?
In fact, it is our fellow creature, sharing the four senses and five vital organs with us on this Earth. That is why, in Europe and America, they have the Society for the Protection of Livestock; do you see?
Dao-4.4: Yes.
Mr. Tám-4.5: But in Vietnam, there’s no Society for the Protection of Livestock! Killing livestock! That’s why the karmic burden is so heavy; that’s why today we’re constantly plagued—constantly plagued by storms and tempests, by all manner of calamities; driven to despair by the hardships of life, only then do we turn to spiritual practice! Floods and storms are extremely dangerous, yet they serve to awaken everyone’s hearts to practise spirituality, to repent, and practise vegetarianism.
Only when people are able to maintain a strict vegetarian diet and practise meditation, will peace be restored to Vietnam: a thousand years of peace; that will be a thousand years of peace; there will be no more war! That is why there are many tigers practising spiritual cultivation on the mountains of Vietnam. Every evening, people light incense to pay homage to the Tigers! Moreover, people living in the forests of Pleiku and Ban Mê Thuật have seen tigers come down from the mountains, yet they do not eat human flesh! This is no mere rumour! People have built temples to worship these tigers; do you see?
Vô Vi Friend-4.5: I’ve heard that these meditating tigers, having nothing to eat, eventually became so thin they were nothing but skin and bones!
Mr. Tám-4.5: Yes;
Vô Vi Friend-4.6 Because at that time I was still very young, I only heard about it from my parents. My uncle-in-law built a hermitage deep in the forest;
Mr. Tám-4. 6: Yes;
Vô Vi Friend-4.7 Well, usually on the major full moon days, such as the first and seventh month full moons, Master,
Mr. Tám-4.7: Yes;
Vô Vi Friend-4.8: The tiger would come over to that side over there to listen to the sutras!
Mr. Tám-4.8: Yes;
Fellow Believer-4.9: Once the sutra recitation is over, the tiger leaves;
Mr. Tám-4.9: Yes;
Fellow Believer-4.10: But two or three years later, the tigers that came back to listen to the sutras were so weak they could barely walk,
Mr. Tám-4-10: Yes;
Fellow Believer-4.11: They were skin and bones; some people guessed that the tiger had practised and that,
Mr. Tám-4. 11: They have a great vow; they have a great vow! The tiger is a symbol of the aggressive type of person, one who flouts the law, is violent, and wants to live independently on their own! Very vicious! That is why, in the cycle of reincarnation, they become a tiger! They are vicious; they kill people without a second thought; it is truly ferocious!
Fellow Adept-4.11: Yes;
Mr. Tám-4.12: There is a realm where the tiger’s soul has awakened; it lives in unity within a den; yet there is also conflict with other tigers! Snakes also come to bully the tiger! There are many extraordinary tales! There are those tiger dens where they practise spiritual cultivation! There are dens, proper places; where various kinds of animals live together in harmony! That happens too! There are proper elders and juniors! Yet some, having practised, refuse to eat meat; they bring meat back, but they won’t eat it; the elders force them to!
Many things happen; there are many complicated matters, but ultimately, it’s to awaken their minds, so that they repent and make a great vow: ‘In my next life, I won’t do this anymore!’ or, ‘In this very life, I’ll naturally stop eating meat!’
Many animals have completely given up eating meat, because they see the animal’s corpse—but they are the spirit! Because they are, for example, like 110 volts but only have 3 volts left to use, or 6 volts; it can only enter that specific place and nothing more! Because whilst it was alive, it indulged in debauchery and lust, squandering its vital energy; its spiritual energy steadily declined, and upon its death, it was tormented in hell: it did nothing useful for society, but instead robbed and plundered others, this and that; it was tortured and punished in hell! After being punished, it pleaded to be reincarnated at the level it had been at, so they simply sent it there! Having committed sins throughout its life, it feared being caught, and that was that.
They reincarnated it as a mouse: it scurried out only to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck by the police—the police, that cat, lying in wait; the moment it scurries out, it’s grabbed by the scruff! Out on the street, people see it, people beat it! Can you see how the mouse suffers? And now, when we’re talking about medicines to test on humans, we must first test them on mice; is that clear? It has blood similar to that of humans; it also has the four senses and five viscera; it’s very clever; even when hiding discreetly on a rooftop, it is still hunted down and killed; because its sins are so grave, it must endure many lifetimes as a mouse before it can return to being human!
Ah, once it has become a mouse, it must remain a mouse, and a mouse, and a mouse, before it can return to being human! But once it becomes human, if it is extremely wicked, it will revert to being an animal!
Only humans have the opportunity to practise spiritual cultivation!
Only those who feel remorse, repent, reform their hearts and mend their ways can evolve—they will naturally evolve! Then, in the next life, even if they do not attain enlightenment, become an Immortal or a Buddha, but live virtuously and kindly, thereby creating good karma, they will be reborn as a person in a better family with better means to practicespiritual cultivation.
Vô Vi Friend-6: Master, as you said, killing animals incurs a heavy sin. But if one encounters creatures such as venomous snakes or cobras, for example, if they bite you or are about to attack you, then one must defend oneself or kill them! Does one incur sin in that case, Master?
Mr. Tám-6: No! Not everyone encounters venomous snakes! Those with good karma will not be bitten; they will never encounter a venomous snake; even if they wanted to, they could not!
A venomous snake must wait for the right hour and minute to kill a particular person to avenge a past-life grudge! It is not the case that everyone will encounter one! Just ask, ‘How many people in this city have encountered a venomous snake?’ Is that correct?
Vô Vi Friend-6: Yes.
Mr. Tám-6: They have no chance of encountering one. Yet there are those who never give it a second thought, yet boast, ‘I do good deeds,’ this and that; but if they were wicked in a past life, they’ll be bitten by a venomous snake in this one! Killed unexpectedly; there’s no way to foresee it!
Therefore, everything is governed by laws: look at the wilderness, it’s all governed by laws: some kill, some are killed; some do so intentionally, some unintentionally; it’s all there; there are laws for everything!
So, people just sit around speculating, “Ah, what if I come across a venomous snake? I’ll have to kill it,” and so on and so forth. They go their whole lives without ever encountering a single venomous snake; they die without ever encountering one! There are plenty of people like that! Isn’t that right?
Vô Vi Friend-7: Sir, earlier you said the ??? physical body is a sin; but in summer, when there are so many flies and mosquitoes, if we don’t kill them, how can we keep our homes clean, Sir?
Mr. Tám -7: Why is there any need to kill them now? Now we have mosquito nets; they can’t get in, can they? People make mosquito nets out of compassion!
Vô Vi Friend -7.1: But what about poor households that don’t have mosquito nets, Master?
Mr. Tám-7.1: No matter how poor you are, you can manage; you can still protect yourself! In Vietnam, the flies swarm but it’s all fine in the end—it’s no big deal! (the disciples laugh) It’s a land of flies, after all! When we eat rice, I’m the one sharing my meal with the flies; it’s all fine in the end! But is there any other way to eat? Well, there is: I boil water and mix it with the rice, then eat it; they can’t get to it, but I can, so I eat it (laughs). I’m competing with the flies! There’s no way to chase them away! They swarm all over me; what can you do about them? They’re fertilised with this organic manure, see? The thing is, when we eat our rice, it breeds flies! Just close your eyes and give it a swat—you’ll kill a dozen or so flies!
Vô Vi Friend -8: Yes, Mr Tam, (unclear…)
Mr. Tám-8: The Wonderful Dharma within the heart! We must utilise the Wonderful Dharma that is already within ourselves; only then can both sides evolve; do you see? Even within our own family, if we don’t (unclear…), how can we progress? Even a straight tree ends up crooked! It’s leaning, it’s so distressed, it’s leaning! (laughs) It bears no fruit; isn’t that right? We must make it happy so it can rise; it must have faith, it must have someone to support it, it must have a constructive spirit, it must feel secure as it rises—only then will it develop; do you see?
Spiritual practice is the same: amongst fellow practitioners, those who have practised for a long time must humble themselves so that newcomers may ask; and often we must act as someone even more foolish than the newcomer, so that we can sweep that pile of rubbish from over there to this side; do you see? The newcomer might think: ‘Oh, sir, you’ve come here to ask about the Vô Vi spiritual practice, but your spiritual capacity is higher than mine!’
‘Your spiritual capacity is higher than mine!’ They’re already overjoyed; they’ve heard every little thing you’ve shared!
‘But,’ the word ‘but’ serves to supplement their understanding, making it easier for them to go home (inaudible…) and remember more. Do you see? There you go! Therefore, a spiritual teacher must always be flexible, always adaptable, always patient; do you see? Only then can we reach the point of imparting enlightenment to them; do you see? You must understand that point!
Don’t make the mistake of thinking, ‘I’m at a higher level in my practice’; that is to go astray; do you see?
By humbling ourselves, we draw all that is pure towards us, and our courage and wisdom are constantly nurtured! Do you understand?
Love is such a joy, isn’t it! Ask Brother Trần Văng Tánh if he understands (Vô Vi Friend laughs). Trần Văng Tánh.
Vô Vi Friend-9: I’m surprised—since the Vancouver visit until now, I don’t know if the Master had a specific intention or if it was unintentional; I don’t know whether the Master changed my name or simply forgot it; so I’m unsure?
Mr. Tám-9: Trần Vĩnh Tánh.
Vô Vi Friend-9.1: Yes, Trần Vĩnh Tánh.
Mr. Tám-9.1: But I call you Trần Văng! (laughs).
Vô Vi Friend-9.2: ‘Văng’ means to let go of one’s nature, which is (The Master and the fellow disciple laugh together)… ‘Văng’ the temperament, let go of the heat (fellow devotee laughs). The Master says: ‘You’re clinging to your temperament, it’s so painful!’
Mr. Tám-9.2: Clinging to that hot-tempered nature, aren’t you!
Vô Vi Friend-9.3: Yes, Master, is that permanent? Is the temperament permanent?
Mr. Tám-9.3: Oh!
Vô Vi Friend-9.4: Eternal nature! (fellow disciple laughs).
Mr. Tám-9.4: Eternal nature is very hot! Now, ‘Cast Off Your Temperament’ means it’s gone! (fellow disciple laughs).I’m talking about ‘Cast Off Your Temperament’, not ‘Cultivate Your Temperament’! Trần Văng Tánh! Let go of that hot temper! (The Master and the disciple laugh together).
Vô Vi Friend-9.5: (unclear…)
Mr. Tám-9.5: Several lifetimes! (the disciple laughs). Then in there, in there... (the disciple laughs) Imagining, imagining bliss, thinking it was... (the disciple laughs) but not understanding a thing! (Vô Vi Friendlaughs) Didn’t understand a thing! She’d get annoyed, wouldn’t put up with it! “Let me think about it!” But didn’t know what to think about? (Vô Vi Friendlaughs)
“Ah, so it turns out I was doing the opposite; I was teaching them the wrong way, instructing them to do this practice: inhaling the heat, generating heat inside – that’s why it all went wrong!”
So, having come to my senses, I took the principle of ‘Namo Amitabha Buddha’: ‘Instead of smoking, I’ll tuck my tongue in, clench my teeth, and chant “Nam, Mo, A, Di, Da, Buddha” in place of the cigarette! Once they get used to it, they’ll give it all up!’ Isn’t that right? Just swap one habit for another; isn’t that right?
Vô Vi Friend-9.5: Yes.
Mr. Tám-9.6 Goodness me! Leaving your wife is easy, but giving up smoking is out of the question! I’ve said it before.
Vô Vi Friend-9.6: Yes, I’ve said the same! (fellow disciple laughs)
Mr. Tám-9.7: (unclear…) Two thousand Vietnamese piastres was a real blow; that was a huge sum back then! Shaking hands with my mate: “If I smoke again, over there—if I smoke again, I’ll pay you 2,000!”
Going over there, saying to the lady: “Sell me one on credit!” (fellow disciple laughs). Sitting there thinking: ‘Good heavens, I’m no gentleman! Right, I’ll have to pay this bloke 2,000 to show a bit of honour!’ Losing 2,000 really stung; but I had to pay up – no backing out, no making excuses! I’d given my word!
So, that weak-willed person – I was looking at my own weakness: I couldn’t even resist a single cigarette! I’ve said my sin is that of filial disobedience, haven’t I! Back then, my old man had a few sons; he’d often gather us round and say: ‘When you grow up, don’t go squandering money; money’s hard to come by these days!’ Now he’d go on about the economic hardship, talking at length to his sons, drumming it into their heads: ‘Don’t go squandering money!’
I said: “Whatever you say, Dad, but I reckon everyone finds it easy to make money!”
“How so? Explain to me how it’s so easy.”
“Even at this very moment, they’re burning their money, Dad!”
He was smoking! (the congregation laughs). Then he said quietly: “This lad, he’s only just a bit older but he’s so full of his own ideas! But he’s clever! He tells me off, you know? (the congregation laughs). When you grow up, you’ll be stuck with the problem of selling cigarettes!”
You can see he’s after a profit! But back when I was in the army (can’t quite make it out…) in Vietnam, I’d buy Caraven-A cigarettes, three packs of No. 5, and take them up to Phnom Penh to sell. But back then I’d ask them, ‘Three packs of No. 5 and Caraven-A – what’s the difference between the two that they’re sold at such different prices? How do you smoke them? What’s the flavour like?’ I didn’t know; I didn’t even know how to smoke, because I hated it when people smoked! When I was young, I hated people smoking! Now I’m forced to; “Come on, I’ve got to give it a go!”
I gave it a go and got used to it! And from then on, I was hooked! No matter how many cigarettes I sold, it was never enough to pay for my own! Smoking back then was really expensive; the price went up every day, because the cigarettes were imported! Smoking those three made me go bankrupt!
Did I get fined? When I was young, I used to criticise my old man, and I ended up getting it myself! (laughs) That’s a sin of filial disobedience, isn’t it? (laughs) See? That’s a subtle way of criticising someone; but I got into trouble for it!
Vô Vi Friend-10: Master, when you were young, did you speak as eloquently as you do now? Or is it because of your spiritual practice that you speak so eloquently now? (Vô Vi Friend laughs)
Mr. Tám-10: When I was young, I wasn’t as charming as I am now! I used to be quite shy back then! Now that I’ve practised, that’s gone! Now that I’ve practised, it’s opened up—every state of mind is accessible; whatever state arises, I can apply it; it’s different now! Whether we’re familiar or not, but after sitting for a while, it’s as if we’ve known each other for ages; isn’t that right? “Isn’t that right, Uncle? We’ve known each other for ages (laughs), my friend; it’s no big deal!”
‘There are no difficult matters in this world,’ yet they keep seeking out difficult things to do. They think it’s difficult, but it isn’t! But once you see that things are easy, there’s nothing difficult at all!
Vô Vi Friend-11: (unclear…)
Mr. Tám-11: Whatever he says is fine! When there’s nothing to talk about with him, he’ll just talk about aeroplanes! (laughs) Science—he can talk about anything! And what he says, that is, he uses simple, down-to-earth examples from country life, just like in science! So does one have to practise spiritual cultivation for that?
Vô Vi Friend-11.1: Is that something we achieve through spiritual practice? Like, if we practise diligently, our minds open up, and only then do we come to understand it, is that right, Master?
Mr. Tám-11.1: It opens up and sees.
Vô Vi Friend-11. 1: Yes, Master.
Mr. Tám-11.2: Mr Tư said, “It’s easy, pilot,” he said: “Pilot, what’s the big deal! Just get on the plane, press a button, watch the dial, pull it a bit, and off it goes!” That’s what he said (laughs)
The other chap said, “Exactly! That’s all there is to it!” (laughs) But he’d never even seen a aeroplane before! (laughs) He said, “Pull the lever, and it takes off!” (laughs) He said, “It’s easy!”
Then he talked about this and that regarding science, using simple examples. He took a pomelo, an orange (laughs), a guava, and then he explained! And yet that bloke bought it! “They’re piled high in the bin, no one’s eating them—there’s too much, they’re all being offered as offerings!”
He was famous; even now, whenever people mention him, everyone is in awe! We love him dearly! He cured so many illnesses that the hospitals couldn’t treat! He, back in the day, suffered a great deal too; in the dead of night or at all hours of the day, the sick were brought to his house; it was nothing out of the ordinary!
I said, “Come on, stop it, don’t do it anymore!”
He asked: “What then? It’s already happened; what now?”
I said: “Stop it! If you carry on like this, it won’t do. You advised me not to go, not to cross that line, to just serve humanity; yet now you’re doing the very same thing – when will you ever find liberation? You’re getting on in years!”
He said: “All right, I’ll take your advice! Forget it!”
After that, he called it off and told the Cô and Cậu to go elsewhere, to go down to Thầy Hai. Now Thầy Hai is looking after them! Thầy Hải Sa Đéc, his successor.
Bạn Đạo-11.3: He’s still alive, Thầy?
Mr. Tám-11.3: Still alive! He said, “Drawing the Ngũ Lôi talisman is quite effective these days: for evil ailments, just stand there and do (unclear…)—it works! (laughs) It’s quite effective!” (The Master and his fellow devotee laughed together).
But when I arrived, I said, ‘You must practise, my friend! You know, Mr Tu is also good, yet even he has to practise! If you don’t practise, how will you save lives?’
‘Well, I’ve thought about practising, but my superiors keep sending me to treat patients; what am I to do now?’
When the Communists came, he carried on treating patients just like that; the Communists were suspicious of him, and he was afraid—afraid they’d take him off to ‘re-education’—but the situation left him no choice; he had to treat patients and save lives. And it didn’t cost a thing; he’d just stand there and give a sharp ‘Smack!’ Oh my, they’d go down! (laughs)
It was absolutely terrifying! The Five Thunder Spell, after all! Because that was all he’d learnt; he knew nothing of the other disciplines; Master Tư didn’t teach them; He taught just enough to save people in emergencies; He didn’t teach anything else; so he only knew that one discipline; apart from that, he couldn’t do anything else! (laughs).
As for Master Tu, he knows many spells—all sorts of them! He could make people leave their wives or husbands; he can make married couples separate, and then reunite them! You have to complete the full course; but he never made people leave their wives or husbands! He made them reunite.
He’ll do what he’s asked, but in the end, his son-in-law took a concubine! Well, he just had to put up with it! He said he had no right to cause separation; but he did have the right to bring people back together: “Now that they’re together, it’s not permissible to separate them; that goes against the laws of Buddhism! They’re following the Buddhist path now.”
In the past, he could do it: once they were together, he could make them separate; but now, that is to say, since the two of them are together, he has no right to separate them: that is their karmic bond: ‘The clearer I see it, the less I can cause it to break apart; I have no right to do so!’ He lets them work off their karma in this lifetime.
As for before, he didn’t know; when he was young, he didn’t know: “I learnt this spell to earn a little money to support my children,” so he was forced to do it. After that, he stopped; he absolutely refused to do it any more.
(unclear…)
Mr. Tám-12:… Knowing oneself is important; do you see? The law of one’s own life is the law of self-salvation! The soul is not easily attained, nor is the body easily attained!” That’s what he said.
But once you lose your soul, once you lose your body, you can never get them back! Remember this!
Mr Tam, go on, repeat this: the animal yearns to become human; humans yearn deeply to become a fully realised Immortal, a fully realised Buddha. But to become an Immortal or a Buddha, one must fulfil one’s own great vow. Whenever you embark on the spiritual path, whatever you vow to do, you must see it through to the end; regardless of the obstacles! You must understand this!
Take a person, for instance, whilst working—even in the kitchen—if they give up when faced with an obstacle, the pot of soup will go off, and that stir-fry will burn; do you see?
If we are resolute, everything will turn out well! Do not abandon one thing for the sake of another; do not let worldly matters cause you to abandon your great vow!
Once you have made a great vow, you must fulfil it at all costs! It is not easy to have a great aspiration! There are plenty of people in this world who lack the great aspiration to practise and study. But as you are still young, if you have this great aspiration to practise and study, you must seize it; do not let others take advantage of you and cause you to miss this opportunity! You won’t want to be sitting there regretting it when you’re as old as Uncle Tam! (laughs)
To have this in one’s youth is a great blessing; to practise this Dharma is a great blessing! Only by overcoming these obstacles will you realise, ‘I am infinite!’ At that point, you’ll be free to save others!
But if you get caught up in this reason or that, you’ll only torment yourself and never make any progress!
Learning at school is one thing, but learning within the mind is quite another: keep that restlessness locked within your mind; do not let it out. If you let that restlessness out, it will drag you down, and you’ll collapse completely!
If you can contain the turmoil, contain it completely! But to let the turmoil out is to face collapse!
A legacy is not about worldly achievements or material possessions; a legacy lies within the mind! If the mind collapses, everything collapses!
The great vow of the spiritual practitioner is to undertake great deeds for the future, not petty ones: not for this person or that person; it is futile! Undertake great deeds: do one thing that will benefit all future endeavours!
That is why the Buddha succeeded; those who practise the Way have persevered and succeeded, for only by overcoming any obstacle can one progress.
So today, the obstacles faced by young people are a precious gift to awaken the mind and hold onto; and by clearly seeing examples of virtuous success, one must succeed!
It is marvellous, isn’t it?
Young people, do not be afraid of stumbling! Stumble, stumble—I say, ‘Stumble, but if I have a way to recover, then I shall recover!’
Do not act in a way from which you cannot recover, for then your mind and body will be utterly shattered—and how could you possibly recover then?
Therefore, when a person comes into this world and dwells in a physical body, Heaven tests them a little with desire to see if they waver. Words and deeds—well, to see if their actions and words are in harmony. Only then can one fulfil one’s great vow.
Therefore, human beings today, endowed with wisdom, who wish to do good for the future, must face obstacles early on. And when faced with obstacles early on, one must resolutely press on—just as one treads on thorns, plucks them out and casts them aside, and continues on! That is what makes one a true hero; that is how one cultivates the heroic nature!
[moving on to another section]
Mr. Tám-13: Young people have that (unclear…)—they see what a demon is, and one can go… [33:36] - The word ‘Yêu’ (love), in Vietnamese, is written very clearly: I, Ê, U. When the mind is deluded, it becomes ‘Yêu’—there’s nothing else to it! Always deluded, always mad!
‘I love the song, the lyrics—I love you too!’ In the end, (unclear…)—you’re mad; see?
Delusion is love. Love—it’s a numbing, aching sensation right here, turning into delusion! Love! That’s all it takes to become a demon!
L-O-V-E. This chap’s afraid of demons, that’s why he came looking for me! (laughs). He loves singers, loves the singer so much! [35:09]
Vô Vi Friend-14: I think the issue of sexuality is the strongest challenge for a spiritual practitioner, Master!
Mr. Tám-14: Oh, it’s terrible; absolutely terrible; it’s a tiger,
Vô Vi Friend-14: Yes.
Mr. Tám -14.1: … Let it loose and it’ll bite you to death! (fellow disciples laugh together)
Vô Vi Friend-14.2:: I’ve noticed that on this occasion, Master has emphasised and repeatedly brought up the issue of sexuality to remind the spiritual friends,
Mr. Tám-14.2: Oh,
Vô Vi Friend-15: … and on vegetarianism versus non-vegetarianism. I’ve noticed the Master has given a lecture on sexuality. May I respectfully ask, when the opportunity arises, if the Master could give a lecture on vegetarianism versus non-vegetarianism?
Mr. Tám-15: Vegetarianism versus non-vegetarianism – I’ve spoken about that for a long time!
Vô Vi Friend-15.1: Yes, but a separate lecture recording. For example, when the Master spoke about sexuality, there was a separate recording.
Mr. Tám-15.2: It’s all the same, no matter how much I say. Vegetarianism and non-vegetarianism depend on the mind! If one wishes to eliminate desire, one must practise permanent vegetarianism; what else is there? (laughs). Vegetarianism and non-vegetarianism—I’ve spoken about it, I’ve spoken about it!
The more savoury it is, the more savoury it becomes! The deeper you go into the sea, the deeper you sink; isn’t that right?
On the shore it feels light and airy, but once you’re in the sea, you sink deeper and deeper! (laughs). The old men and women these days say the same thing! [36:47]
“When I was young, he loved me and fathered this little devil—he was such a pain!” (laughs) Isn’t that right?
Why did he father this little devil, who was such a pain? (laughs). Because he loved me! I, E, U! (laughs). Just because he loved me, but he didn’t know what he was doing at all!
Many women and men say, “I hated him; I only married him because he followed me, that’s all! Otherwise, there’s no way I’d have married him! And I don’t know why I ended up having three little devils like that!” Isn’t that right?
But you don’t realise that those three little devils are three enlightened masters who have come down to teach you the Way! Three enlightened masters teaching you patience and harmony! You can’t just leave them; see? (laughs).
When you understand the Way, everything at home teaches you a lesson. All those questions, all those daily provocations, are there to awaken your mind; there’s nothing to it!
So, within the family, you get angry and then you stop being angry. There you go! Once your mind is awakened, what’s there to be angry about?
“This time I’m angry with you; once I’m angry, I’ll just walk out!”
You’ll turn back halfway; see? It’s already been decided: you stay there to study; you must complete the course before graduating; once the course is finished, they’ll naturally send you on your way! Don’t worry!
[Skipping to another point in time]
Vô Vi Friend-16: (Unclear…) Jump straight into meditation, or practise your own methods,
Mr. Tám-16: Yes,
Vô Vi Friend-16.1: As for those who are weak—cases like my wife, or Brother Vĩnh, or other younger fellow practitioners—
Mr. Tám-16. 1: Right,
Vô Vi Friend-16.2: They’ve joined, but lack a foundation; it’s as if they have to start from A, B, C.
Mr. Tám-16.2: Exactly: A, B, C!
Vô Vi Friend-16.3: But if they join and rush into it, will they be affected, or anything like that?
Mr. Tám-16.3: No! They’ve been told that when they first join, they should only practise ‘Concentraion of Spiritual Energy” and ‘Laying Down Abdominal Breathing”.
Vô Vi Friend-16.3: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.4: First and foremost is health,
Vô Vi Friend-16.4: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.5 Then, from a foundation of health, one becomes aware of the spiritual aspect.
Vô Vi Friend-16.5: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.6: Whether one practises at that point is another matter entirely.
Don’t just jump in and do all sorts of things like everyone else, just for show! That won’t achieve anything, and it might even be harmful!
Vô Vi Friend-16.6: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.7: Therefore, one must start from stage one: what people in this world need most is good health; and only once one has achieved good health can one speak of spiritual matters. Without good health, what is the point of spirituality? Is that not so?
Vô Vi Friend-16.7: Yes.
Mr. Tám-16.8: Ah! So, once you’ve resolved the issue of health, you’ll realise where you went wrong. Ah! ‘Why am I like this, like that; why am I ill now? Ah, it’s because the seven emotions and six desires have led me astray, that’s why I’ve fallen ill. Now, thanks to this, what have I managed to reduce? Before, my habits were often characterised by sadness, worry, sexual desires, and a craving for entertainment; now I’ve reduced them. By reducing those things, I feel stronger! It was then that I awoke spiritually, in my soul! It was then that I decided to practise spiritual cultivation!”
How do you practise?
“I must renounce the distractions of the world to return to serenity!” Do you see?
Vô Vi Friend-16.8: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.9: Ah! Only then did it open up, only then could one progress, only then could one choose the path to follow! Do you see?
Vô Vi Friend-16.9: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.10: Therefore, the Vô Vi spiritual path is very orderly: one does as one is taught. If one overdoes it, nothing comes of it! Doing things haphazardly achieves nothing; then one ends up having to adjust one’s approach! One simply has to bear with it.
Vô Vi Friend-16.10: Yes!
Mr. Tám-16.11: Here, people tell us that health comes first. Whatever you do, health comes first. Only then do you choose the spiritual path.
There are many who try all sorts of things and find they feel fine. Then, after a while, when faced with sexual desires—the Seven Emotions and Six Desires—it resurfaces; it tests you! You’re swept away immediately!
That is why people are told to practise the ‘‘Laying Down Abdominal Breathing” for five or six months—just do it for five or six months to open up that aspect. And when they tell you this, it’s because they want to prevent all sorts of things from happening in the future.
But many people are impatient, and that’s why they collapse! Then they end up floundering, returning to where they started rather than going anywhere; but it’s too late, they’ve missed the boat. That’s not how it works.
As for the older generation, they’ve come to understand; they’ve grown weary of life, having been trampled upon by their own state of mind, by society, and by all manner of troubles; they’re fed up. Little by little, as they awaken, they seek their own path to follow, and they have no desire to return to the old ways!
As for the young, they’re lured by external influences—this thing, that thing, the other thing. It drives them on, so they may stumble during that phase! That’s why one should practise “Laying Down Abdominal Breathing” to reduce the Seven Emotions and Six Desires.
Naturally, once they’ve woken up, they realise, ‘Ah, now I’ve cut back, I’ve cut back; I’m no longer obsessed with going out and doing this and that,” meaning that the turmoil gradually diminishes. Only when they let go of their sorrows do they find joy; and when they are joyful, they naturally realise, ‘Which path is more pleasant? The light and serene path!’
Then they seek out that light and serene path to follow.
[after some time has passed]….
Mr. Tám-17: After hearing the spiritual cultivation path, he rushed home to shave his head, gave up all worldly pleasures, and didn’t even touch his wife’s bed! The next day, he was at his wits’ end, so he ran off to look for a prostitute! Goodness me! That won’t do!
Family matters—no one’s stopping you! Family is legitimate: Heaven established it, so it’s all right! As for husband and wife, there are always limits; one day it will naturally be limited; it will gradually diminish, little by little.
So it’s through spiritual practice that we reach the right path: having a proper wife and husband is fine, there’s nothing wrong with that! Heaven hasn’t forbidden it; He created it, after all!
People don’t understand; they do things wrong, act recklessly, go mad, and end up causing family chaos! There’s no monk who calls for one to abandon one’s wife or husband, is there?
Vô Vi Friend-17: Master,
Mr. Tám-17.1: Practise meditation, but remember to practise “Laying Down Abdominal Breathing”; this is because the Seven Emotions and Six Desires can betray you at any moment; do you understand?
Vô Vi Friend-17.1: Yes!
Venerable Mr. Tám-17.2: Therefore, one must remember to practise that, so that the energy descending from the navel can be purified, and there will be no backlash.
If the energy descending from the navel is not purified, it will cause disruption at any moment! Therefore, this practice is a profound and essential method for the practitioner!
That is why many practitioners give up halfway: monks who have practised meditation for a very long time, yet one day they abandon their vows and go off to marry! They refuse to address that issue!
That aspect must be addressed daily!
Therefore, when practising, one regains one’s youth! It grows stronger, not weaker! One becomes strong again—stronger than before! There you go! So, we must take precautions to release it, so that the two streams of energy rise upwards instead of flowing downwards! Do you see?
Dao-17.2: Yes!
Mr. Tám-18: So that’s a worldly matter! It’s not a spiritual matter.
As for it rising constantly—no! If it rises constantly, it belongs to the Dragon Deity Guardian of the Life Force; there’s nothing more to it! It works, day and night, in the Heavens, and forgets about the mundane affairs of this world.
Vô Vi Friend-19: Is it all right to practise ‘Concentraion of Spiritual Energy” and ‘Continous Cyclical Breathing” at the same time, Master?
Mr. Tám-19: Of course not! That’s precisely the point: Concentraion of Spiritual Energy is Concentraion of Spiritual Energy; it’s normal breathing. With the Continous Cyclical Breathing, one inhales to “fill the navel, fill the chest, and send the breath up to the head,” to allow it to escape. But here, if it’s blocked here, it surges upwards and causes chaos; that simply won’t do!
‘Concentraion of Spiritual Energy’ is simply normal breathing!
As for the ‘Continous Cyclical Breathing”, that is the ‘Continous Cyclical Breathing”.
Vô Vi Friend-19: Yes.
Mr. Tám-19.1: There was a man in Vietnam who was shown one method but practised another: he kept blocking it like that, then inhaled as much as he could; he inhaled, thinking, ‘Let it burst my head open, so it’s easier to go!’ Then his mind went into a whirl.
He asked, “Why does my head go all fuzzy when I do this?”
I said, “Who taught you to do that? ‘Concentraion of Spiritual Energy’ is Concentraion of Spiritual Energy’; ‘ContinousCyclical Breathing’ is ‘Continous Cyclical Breathing”. Go and read the books!”
They’re doing it wrong!
[mp2.2]
Mr. Tám-19.1 (continued): Therefore, everything must be in order. It’s simply because we lack order, creating chaos for ourselves. Driving is the same: people skip first gear, then second, third, and fourth; they say: “You can still drive without fourth gear!” (unclear…) They think it’s better! But after a while, everything becomes loose! If you push it too hard, it breaks!
Does that mean anything you push too hard will break?
Everything just needs to be done in moderation; don’t overdo it: some people can sit until dawn, so naturally they’ll sit until dawn; others can’t even sit for one more minute—when they need to let go, they have to let go! There you go!
Then reflect on your own mistakes; then practise, practise, practise—only then can you build it up! At that point, ‘I need to use my willpower more!’
Day by day, cultivate your willpower to make it stronger, so it understands this, that and the other. It is only through stimulation and reaction that it comes to understand.
Without stimulation and reaction, it will never understand!
Right? If anyone has any questions tonight, ask, and I’ll talk; if not, I’m off to bed!
Vô Vi Friend-20: Yes, Master, sometimes when I’m lying down practising Laying Down Abdominal breathing, I fall asleep and then wake up—is that harmful?
Mr. Tám-20: It’s fine! If it falls asleep, let it sleep.
Vô Vi Friend-20.1: Yes. As for practising Laying Down Abdominal breathing every day, does the Master recommend about three times a day or twice?
Mr. Tám-20.1: Yes, but if it falls asleep, just let it sleep. Sleep well, Sister Fat.
Vô Vi Friend-20.2: Yes. For example, if one can only practise ‘Laying Down Abdominal breathing” three or four times a day, is that right, Master? One shouldn’t practise it too much, should one, Master?
Mr. Tám-21: If you have the time, just practise it. Practising it often is good; there’s no harm in that. Practising ‘LayingDown Abdominal breathing” frequently is beneficial. Doing so cultivates patience; becoming patient helps you to be less hot-headed!
Practising Laying Down Abdominal breathing” frequently makes one a good person; it cures many ailments within oneself.
Is it too hot tonight? Cut down on smoking (unclear…)—it’s evil energy! The body of an animal is evil; do you understand?
Friend on the Path-21: Yes.
Mr. Tám-21.1: That’s not the truth. Don’t go thinking that eating it will make you strong and healthy! It’s harmful, not beneficial. It only causes more harm; it doesn’t make you strong; that’s the truth!
Once one’s wisdom has been awakened, one sees (unclear…) the face of the mystical path (unclear…)—it’s truly terrifying. It seeks revenge on you, it lies in wait for you at any moment; it can bring you down at any moment!
Vô Vi Friend-22: I saw the light for a while, but why is it that sometimes, when I’m sitting idly—just sitting as usual, for example, whilst studying—I try this: often, when my eyes grow tired from reading, I sit with nothing to do, and I try closing my eyes to see if I can perceive the same things I saw whilst meditating! Well, occasionally I do see such things. I don’t understand what that means?
Mr. Tám-22: You have the mark right here, this circular mark on your forehead; do you understand? That is the mark of the Amitabha energy from your invocation of Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật”! That is what produces the light. Maintain your resolve and preserve your purity.
It’s not just through sitting in meditation that you see it; later on, if you can no longer meditate, then you are no longer meditating; do you understand? In the future, if you have attained it, then meditation, you cannot meditate. Meditation is walking whilst meditating, standing whilst meditating, sitting whilst meditating!
Not merely sitting in the meditation posture; do you understand? Ah.
Vô Vi Friend-22.1: Yes. Sometimes when I’m just sitting, with my eyes closed, I can feel it too.
Mr. Tám-22.1: Exactly! That is why it is beneficial; that is the flow of energy emanating from within.
So, you’ve received confirmation; now, as you sit here, you can see that your head is different—it has retracted. I’ve been pulling it back for you all this time. Ever since you first came in, it’s been retracting, so now it rises right in the middle of your forehead; can you see it?
Vô Vi Friend-22.2: Yes! Sometimes when I meditate for a little while, my body naturally feels lighter; it floats up, it floats, it’s floating, floating.
Mr. Tám-22.2: Yes, up in the air, no longer inside the house! Do you understand? That is, later on when you’ve learnt, you’ll see that even a tiny bit is enough for you to understand everything; it’s very quick!
Vô Vi Friend-22.3: I’m afraid that if I sit for too long, my body might go numb or something, which is why it feels as though I’m floating?
Mr. Tám-22.3: No, that’s not it! It’s only when your mind is open that you can float! You must try to eat a vegetarian diet to make your body lighter; do you understand?
Vô Vi Friend-22.3: Yes!
Mr. Tám-22.4: When you’re light, you’ll see the visions even more clearly; if you’re heavy, you’ll lose them. Going off to this place or that (unclear…), moving (unclear…)—you’ll lose them!
Vô Vi Friend-22.5: When closing my eyes, must I close them tightly, Master?
Mr. Tám-22.5: Yes, close them tightly, and you’ll see; just as when you look at a lamp, if you close your eyes, you’ll see the light within it; that is because it has filtered the energy flow inside.
Then, from that, it fades away; there will be a different light.
Then, with a light and clear mind, one can see a vast, wide-open path.
Therefore, people enjoy sitting in meditation because they must see something different; that’s why they enjoy it.
Otherwise, if it’s pitch black, or if it feels stifling whilst sitting, they’ll get up and leave straight away! That’s why, later on, they switched to the Dharma-aspect, adopting a different form!
But for those who cultivate and open their wisdom, when they see you, they cannot help but feel awe; just looking at his face instils awe! The Dharma form is different; looking at the human form, it is different!
At that point, when one speaks, people listen; when one opens one’s mouth to speak of the Way, people listen!
Dao Friend-23: (Unclear…)
Mr. Tám-23: In Esoteric Buddhism, if you wish to do anything, you must ask for the Immortal Power from above!
But with this method, once it’s established, it projects energy straight upwards! We are the Immortal Power projecting energy to support it! It’s different!
Therefore, ‘If a man practises, he attains; if a woman practises, she attains’! That’s how this teaching works! East, West, South, North—whichever direction it comes from, it responds immediately! South-east, south-west, north-east, north-west—it responds immediately! Only such swiftness ensures the body’s safety! That is far more valuable than an amulet! For when the entire Three Realms of Heaven and Earth recognise you, you are already safe!
Therefore, one must cultivate with great diligence!
Often, one may see such light, but it will still change many, many, many times! Seeing an Immortal right before one’s eyes like this, one can never get close! One must strive to cultivate for a very long time before one can get even a little closer!
So what do people need?
They need lightness and purity! The standard of the Higher Realms is purity and lightness.
As for the world’s standard, it is simply this: the strong oppress the weak; do you see?
The standard of the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is purity and lightness. There!
The standard of the world is that the rich oppress the poor, the strong oppress the weak; that is how it is! From the animal realm right through to the human realm, it is the same: the strong oppress the weak, the strong oppress the weak, the strong oppress the weak; the big fish eat the small fish; it is always like that!
Does anyone else have any questions? Do you have any further questions?
Vô Vi Friend-24: Master, you taught that, ‘If you practise, you attain; if she practises, she attains’: but what if, after we have finished our practice, it affects others! What does that mean, Master?
Mr. Tám-24: Influencing others refers to the spirits—the spirit fragments (unclear…)—the bits of flesh we’ve consumed here, the dozens of kilograms within us; these are also our Nine Generations and Seven Ancestors, our brothers, sisters and relatives—who else could they be?
When we practise and attain enlightenment, they too attain it! Ah!
This ‘attainment’ encompasses the entire Microcosm and the entire Universe; it is now connected to the Nine Generations and Seven Ancestors; do you see?
Vô Vi Friend-24.1: Yes. Master, if it’s about the family, will it have any influence, Master?
Mr. Tám-24.1: The influence is simply a good example;
Vô Vi Friend-24.1: Yes (Unclear…)
Mr. Tám-24.2 … there is the light of a good example so that the family, when they fail, will look to and think of themselves; do you see? “Oh!” Then they’ll repent and practise.
But one’s family observes one more closely: only when one changes in this way will they follow that direction and change themselves. That is why, many people have attained the Way, yet their families—wives and children—do not practise, and absolutely refuse to practise! Only after that person has died do they begin to seek, because seeing everyone else seeking, they too go in search; so many people are seeking!
Fellow Believer-25: No; it’s because I see that among us Vietnamese, among us East Asians, there is much virtue; whereas over here, it’s all about Science. Sir, if only we could prove it to them clearly so that they might believe?
Mr. Tám-25: Yes.
Vô Vi Friend-25.1: Well, so I find it rather difficult for Westerners.
Mr. Tám-25.1: It’s not difficult! Once a practitioner has attained realisation, they can demonstrate this clearly to others, because their character used to be one way, but now it is different! Not just their character; their manner of behaviour; and their knowledge and intellect have all changed as well!
Vô Vi Friend-25.2: Yes (Unclear…)
Mr. Tám-25.2:… so, the person’s husband or wife must also study; they are obliged to study! Because this person is now wiser than before; they do not have to go to school like those who have not practised! Those in the sciences must go to school; but in this case, these people do not go to school, yet they return and answer questions even more quickly than those who do go to school! That is where the difference lies!
They have undergone a spiritual transformation, and everyone in the family must acknowledge that, ‘This is genuine progress, but we do not know how it has come about!’
So, at that point, it means, ‘He practises, he attains; she practises, she attains’; but one must write a book to leave behind, lest one should die, and only then will they take out the book and read it, ‘Ah, so that’s how it’s done, and this is the result!’ Do you see?
Dao-26: Master, regarding the invocation “Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật”, is it good to invoke “Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật”, “Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật”, “Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật”? Or, for example, to inhale whilst saying ‘Nam’, then on the exhale ‘Mô’ as the Master taught? Is that slower pace better, or is it better to invoke,
Mr. Tám-26: No, that slow pace is different! Now, just focus right on the centre of the crown of the head; invoke continuously like that at the crown of the head,
Vô Vi Friend-26: Yes
Mr. Tám-26.1: … is better.
That other method is for people to break through delusion and attachment. ‘Nam’—it runs here; when you concentrate here, these six also run evenly; concentrate here; do you see? Only then can you stabilise the crown, ‘The Three Flowers Rest at the Crown.’ One must practise that point!
Later, when the Continuous Cyclical Breathing turns fully, ‘The Five Energies harmonise, the Three Flowers rest at the Crown’; only then will it be effortless; one calls it, ‘Pick flowers to offer to the Buddha’!
Vô Vi Friend-26.2: It’s just that I heard the Master say ‘Nam’,
Mr. Tám-26.2: Exactly, that’s to help you understand; that’s the point!
For those new to the practice: ‘Nam’ here is scientifically accurate—it refers to a vibrational force within the energy flow—so that people aren’t misled into thinking: ‘I invoke ““Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật” for the Buddha to hear, and the Buddha will reward me!’
If you think like that, you’ll practise forever without making any progress.
Here, however, we have discovered these six points; new practitioners must discover them before they can settle here, because in six months one must return to the One, the six minds must return to the One; do you see? Here.
Vô Vi Friend-26.3: But if I invoke too much, my face starts to itch!
Mr. Tám-26.3: Itchiness is good! It’s the lustful nature!
Vô Vi Friend-26.4: It runs back and forth, back and forth.
Mr. Tám-26.4: We have a lustful nature! Just invoke loudly to drive it out completely, and only then will your form change!
That is the lustful nature which everyone possesses; it itches and forms lumps and bumps—never mind; let it come out, let it come out!
Vô Vi Friend-26.5: Or perhaps whilst sitting listening to you teaching spirituality to fellow Vô Vi friends, it also itches, and it comes out!
Mr. Tám-26.5: Of course! That is one’s lustful nature! If you practise vegetarianism for a while, it will disappear; it must all come out! Back then, because of this itch, I was scared, so I touched it, and that’s why it went back in! There are many people sitting like this who feel a sharp, painful sting; they put your hand down and check for themselves? “There’s nothing here! It’s gone!” They also thought it was a scorpion or some creature that had bitten them! There’s no creature there at all; there isn’t! See?
This is very scientific! We must drive it out! That numbness, that itch within our very being, we must overcome it if we are to return to spirituality!
As for that numbness and itch—if we give in to them, we’ll never make any spiritual progress!
We must overcome these two things! These two are incredibly harmful! They give rise to lust!
And if we overcome them both, they’re defeated; then we’ll always be at peace and at ease!
That’s why many people can sit for 3 or 4 hours, thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, how blissful it is!”
Yet many outsiders look on with their eyes wide open and think it’s daft!
But those sitting there feel happier than billionaires! They can sit gently for several hours without getting tired; it’s incredibly blissful, which is why they sit! No one in their right mind would sit just for the sake of it!
Why not ask those who usually sit to give it a go? After just an hour of sitting, they’d get irritated and have to stand up and walk about; they couldn’t sit still; because there’s no air ??? conditioning in here!
It’s air-???conditioned inside it, in here; then one must harmonise with the outside to achieve oneness. (inaudible. ..) so that people can relax and feel rejuvenated! What’s there to worry about!
Dao-26.6: That isn’t harmful, is it, Master?
Mr. Tám-26.6: It isn’t harmful. (inaudible...)
But you must write it down; life is as easy as pie, there’s nothing to it: first, do this; second, do that; third, do this; fourth, do that.
Vô Vi Friend-27: Yes, whenever I promise something to someone, I’m so forgetful!
Mr. Tám-27: Write it down! Always, wherever you go, open your notebook and check. After a while, you’ll remember it all; you won’t forget! I’ve been through that myself!
Vô Vi Friend-27: Yes.
Vô Vi Friend-28: In one of the your teaching recordings, you mentioned that invoking the Father’s name includes “Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật” within it. So why, before meditating, do we recite the Father’s name and then invoke “Nam Mô A Di Đà Phật” three more times, Master?
Mr. Tám-28: Invocation must follow a proper order: the Buddha is like the Father’s beloved child;
Vô Vi Friend-28: Yes
Mr. Tám-28.1: The spirit’s practice is directed towards the Buddha. If one does not become a Buddha through practice, what is the point of practising? Is that not so?
If one practises only to become a demon, what is the point of practising?
One must set one’s goal in this way. One must have a high school diploma to enter university; do you see? One must invoke in this way to uphold the order of the Cosmos; we practise to relearn the order of the Cosmos, nothing else!
Vô Vi Friend-29: Someone asked me a question, but I didn’t know how to answer;
Mr. Tám-29: Yes?
Vô Vi Friend-29.1: … for example, when we recite up to the point, “Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva of the Pure Land”; and then move on to “Namo the Sovereign of the Dragon Flower”. They asked me: if that is a hierarchy, then shouldn’t it be ‘Namo the Western Pure Land, Guanyin Bodhisattva’?
Mr. Tám-29.1: No, that’s not it! These are streams of Pure Spiritual Energy, and these streams also follow the order of the Cosmos. Invoking in this way is also attested to by Amitabha Buddha and by Guanyin.
Vô Vi Friend-29.1: Yes;
Mr. Tám-29.2: There is proof; only then is there the attestation of, of, of Amitabha Buddha and Guanyin.
As for this side, when people practise the energy, it is categorised according to the energy realms. One must possess a certain level of understanding to interpret it properly. Therefore, every phrase and every word carries a distinct resonance: “Namo Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva of the Western Pure Land,” it resonates.
But if one lacks the ‘Pure Energy’, even an explanation will be lost on them! If one were to explain it to them in a way they could understand, they would go mad!
Therefore, those in the secular world must perform the ritual: the ritual must follow a proper order: top, bottom; in order. Speaking to those in the secular world, those who understand Buddhist doctrine—this and that, such and such—must learn the order of the entire Cosmos in this way.
And once they have the Pure Spiritual Energy, they become self-aware: which current flows where, which rises, which descends—they know immediately! As soon as they invoke, with their eyes closed, they see light rising, light descending; they see clearly where, and where; what ‘Maitreya’ means; what ‘Supreme Bliss of Goodness’ means; and what ‘Venerable Maitreya’ signifies? One must possess it all!
Therefore, the vibrational force, the sound one produces, the moment one makes the slightest movement, those Above have already perceived it; thus, for those willing to practise, those beings immediately bestow their guidance.
Vô Vi Friend-29.2: Yes.
Mr. Tám-30: Therefore, those who have committed this or that mistake, or sin, but are willing to practice, their sins are immediately erased by those above! So, it is not that practising has no effect! It does have an effect, but people in this world simply do not understand!
Many people say: “Goodness me, I’m practising now, so why am I poor? I have no money!” Do you see?
But, even without money, they’re never hungry and don’t accumulate any more debt!
As for those who have money, they sow karma and create debt without even realising it!
So, do those with money see their debts? The debts of life; do you see? Debts to one’s wife, debts to one’s children, karmic debts, debts of love, and then material debts too: in business, there’s good fortune and misfortune; when misfortune strikes, you’re left in debt, in a right mess!
As for this poor person, they have nothing more; just enough to get by. Their mind is content; their mind is fulfilled.
As for those with an insatiable heart, they’re bound to spend and get stuck! After all, life spans but a decade; how can one be too greedy? What can one possibly hoard to be greedy?
Therefore, ‘An insatiable human heart is like a snake’s body in an elephant’s’! A person with an insatiable heart remains greedy; the snake opens its mouth—the snake’s body in the elephant: the snake opens its mouth, wanting to eat, wanting to eat, wanting to take, to take; but it bites its gallbladder, and it bites back! It’s all over! Trapped inside! Do you see? People call it, “Snake-body-elephant’,” meaning the snake’s body has slithered into the elephant and become trapped inside; do you see?
Human greed is unacceptable!
Therefore, those on the spiritual path must let go of everything! People call it ‘karma free’; only then can one make progress. And it is the person who possesses nothing who is free from karma.
That is why a poor, struggling couple, with just enough to eat, love each other, saying: ‘You talk to me, I listen; I talk to you, you listen!’ Once they’ve got money, problems arise, and there’s no harmony: ‘If it works out, fine! If not, I’ll pack my bags and go elsewhere!’ As a result, the family falls out.
Why is that?
Because of money!
When they were still poor and relied on one another, the couple lived a very fulfilling life; didn’t they? They shared a bowl of rice between them, and a grain of salt; living a peaceful, fulfilling and joyful life!
But once there’s money, there’s trouble; it creates separation and a reluctance to live together.
Therefore, a practitioner who has been liberated from karma becomes poorer and poorer, with less and less money! What great blessing!
Do not hope, ‘I practise the Dharma yet I have money! I am creating more karma! What is money for? To bind my body! Enough to eat is enough; having rice to eat is a blessing!’
Therefore, a practitioner needs no bed, no fine clothes; a little warm rice to fill the stomach is enough; thus, they are no longer bound by external circumstances.
As for that wealthy person, they must be fussy; ah, the shoes must match the shirt, the trousers, this and that; demanding this and that; it’s all a bit of a mess!
The spiritual practitioner has no such need. Whatever is available is sufficient; everything is a means bestowed by God’s grace. Once they understand that value, they find beauty in everything. But if one fails to understand that value, one finds fault with everything, thereby only creating more suffering for oneself!
Therefore, spiritual practitioners live simply; they eat simply, dress simply; everything is simple! They are happier than those who are fussy, and are not bound by such fussiness; isn’t that so? And they are always strong and healthy, unlike those who are fussy, who are often unhealthy; do you see? It’s different!
Right. Does anyone have any further questions?
Dao-31: Yes, Master! When I breathe in, my stomach becomes very large, and when I breathe out, it contracts very tightly. May I ask, Master: is it best to breathe in deeply into the stomach and breathe out as much as possible? Or is it better to breathe out with the stomach contracting tightly like that?
Mr. Tám-31: Correct! You’re doing it perfectly; there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, there’s not the slightest mistake! And it’s getting stronger and stronger every day; isn’t it?
Vô Vi Friend-31: Yes.
Mr. Tám-32: Stronger and stronger every day. Try having a wife; if you’re lustful, you won’t be able to do it! After two or three attempts, you’ll just give up: “ Why stay awake and suffer?’ Sleeping like that is very harmful; do you see? Because you’ve lost your vital energy.
Vô Vi Friend-32: In my opinion, if one wishes to practise the Vô Vi spiritual path ... (Tape fault. Many sections with distorted audio)
Mr. Tám-33: (inaudible) ... it requires... young people who practise attain enlightenment very quickly; once they’ve resolutely overcome the sexual trials, they attain the spiritual path as if by magic! It’s very powerful. At that point, eating and drinking are no longer necessary; they gradually diminish, and yet the mind remains calm and lucid.
Once you have learnt that much, you will be able to analyse something far broader and deeper than Science.
Why do you know this?
You see that Esoteric Science, when combined with Science, provides an excellent explanation! Then, whilst presenting for a while, it naturally (unclear...) transformed, and you will speak at length without pause; even the teacher would be put off by you!
Vô Vi Friend-34: Well, I’ve been studying, and I’ve come to realise that, as it were, when one dies, there is nothing left of oneself; the body is dissected and scattered, cut up (unclear...)
Mr. Tám-34: That’s because you’re only seeing the physical form.
Vô Vi Friend-34: Yes;
Mr. Tám-35: But when you meditate, you see the Spiritual Body!
So, your mind is like a beautiful, vast forest, with mountains of every kind—it’s all down here! I say, down here it is truly precious! Every inch, every inch, every inch is precious; there is not a single spot that is not wonderful! The organisation is absolutely marvellous, absolutely marvellous!
When you discover this, the absolute marvellousness of God, that is when you will love God even more! “Absolutely marvellous!”
As for this science, it has only discovered this and that, but that’s not all—it hasn’t seen it yet! In the realm of the mysterious: Huyền Bí, ‘Mysterious and Subtle’; ‘Mysterious’ means what the mortal eye cannot see; ‘Subtle’ means even the tiniest thing can be seen!
Science cannot yet achieve this!
Only then will you realise its infinite value, and you will see that the secret Divine Plan of Heaven is incredibly intricate!
Vô Vi Friend-35: Yes;
Mr. Tám-35.1: No one can know in advance. I say this merely to give a hint, to guide people in their spiritual practice, but in reality, no one can know in advance!
Vô Vi Friend-36: So, what about sick people, for example, those who have undergone surgery or had a body part removed, will their spiritual practice be affected? In other words, when God created these organs, such as the heart, liver, spleen, lungs and kidneys; if, as you say, we open our spiritual insight, our wisdom, through practice, will they be lost?
Mr. Tám-36: They are not lost! When you open your wisdom, the Pure Spiritual Energy remains!
Don’t you see: this hand was amputated, so they fitted a prosthetic! Those blokes with prosthetic hands, when they feel itchy, they scratch their prosthetic hand; it’s perfectly natural! (Vô Vi Friend laughs) The energy remains intact!
Ask those with prosthetic hands; you’ll understand; they’re itchy, yet you keep asking, ‘Why are you scratching here?’
They’ll say: ‘It’s the same, isn’t it! It’s really itchy!’” (the spiritual friend laughs). A prosthetic hand! It’s not a real hand, is it? But the energy remains; the Pure Energy, life force, remains!
This life comes from the life force, not from the hand itself! The hand is a lifeless thing!
So, when you die, even if you chop your fingers into a hundred pieces, what’s the point? It wouldn’t hurt at all! But as long as the pure energy flow remains, I feel pain; do you see? The moment it’s touched, it knows immediately; the moment it’s touched here, it reports straight to the brain! This hair is here, there, it’s reported, and it goes up to the brain (unclear...); the hair is flesh and blood (unclear... ) of one’s own; reporting it inwards.
The more one practises, the more serene and pure one becomes; serene and pure; one realises that there are myriad spirits within oneself; the spirit is the king of its own realm! It’s such a joy!
That is why, when people meditate, they are serene and at ease; they may not have a penny to their name in this world, yet within they are very rich; they speak with grace, speak kindly (inaudible...) They speak of the Immortal Realm of Bong Lai (inaudible...), speaking of purity (inaudible...)—whatever you need, it’s there!
Once the spirit is at peace, sitting there, whatever garment you wish to wear, whatever colour, that colour appears! If you wish to drink a cup of tea, the cup of tea floats right over!
You don’t have to go ‘Hey,’ shouting in vain!
So, you see in this society, those rich people—who even become president—just press a button and everything happens; do you see?
Dao-36: Yes.
Mr. Tám-36.1: Everything is effortless; everything is available immediately, right away. When the rich want a shirt made, they just make a phone call; someone takes their measurements, and it’s delivered shortly afterwards; isn’t that right?
But for us poor folk, it takes ages; it takes ages to get anything done; isn’t that right? Ah!
The higher you rise, the more convenient it becomes. And the purer your spiritual cultivation, the more you’ll enjoy things that cannot be revealed to the world! Now, when you reach a different level, you’ll wear different clothes and speak differently, you know! (laughs) You’ll wear different clothes. You’ll talk about all sorts of heavenly secrets.
And later, when you move up another level, you’ll speak of different things! You’ll tell people, ‘Don’t talk about those things, they’re no good! This is much better!’ (laughs) (inaudible...) You move up another level, and you talk about something even better.
Once you’ve become a Buddha, that’s it—you won’t speak anymore, you won’t even bother! ‘You lot can talk, but I won’t say a word!’ Isn’t that right? Ah!
When one becomes an Immortal, the Earthly Immortals talk the most, and then the Heavenly Immortals also speak most about (inaudible...) literature.
Then, upon reaching the Buddha-realm, one stops speaking—one simply doesn’t speak! Therefore, when cultivating the spirit to attain Buddhahood, one allows only the spirit to speak; just as (inaudible...)—in this world (inaudible...)—why would the spirit need to speak any more?
Vô Vi Friend-36.1: For example, you, Master, is it the spirit that speaks now, rather than the soul?
Mr. Tám-36.2: I don’t use the spirit at all! What’s so important to talk about? Only when there’s a serious matter does the spirit manifest! Because we have three souls. Those who can manifest it will become accustomed to the ethereal energy above, calling it back to this place—it’s already tired; let alone calling it down here! This place is very heavy, and the human spirit having been here, moves on to Son Dinh.
Focus on your practice; if you can go, there aren’t many people (inaudible...)—just pop in here for a moment!
Vô Vi Friend-36.3: For example, if we now ask the Master to let the spirit return, the Master (unclear...) gives us (unclear...)
Mr. Tám-36.3: What for? What’s the point? What level of understanding is here that can see?
Vô Vi Friend-36.3: Yes.
Mr. Tám-36.4: You see me wearing a top; I ask, “What sort of top am I wearing?” You don’t even know!
“You’re wearing a shirt, what else?”
You don’t even know what sort of top it is!
Just ask this lad; when he went through Mount Cấm and all that, what was he wearing? Did any of you see? He wasn’t wearing this shirt! It was a different one! Break through this wall, go through that barrier, and things change. Do you see?
In Vietnam, people dress differently; in America, there’s a lot of hassle, lots of different things; in Vietnam, they dress differently; here, they dress differently; right?
That’s why, you constantly learn, you never finish learning! It all depends on your level of understanding and awakening. Those who practise spiritual cultivation well, who practice well and better, see things in a different way! Those who practise poorly see things in a different way.
Vô Vi Friend-37: (unclear...)
Mr. Tám-37: Do you see? As for betraying the Spiritual Path, it’s bringing darkness upon ourself, which is betraying the spiritual way of our heart! To betray the Spiritual Path, we must betray ourself first before we can betray the Spiritual Path! So then we go downhill! Ah, we used to be vegetarian, but now we’ve given it up and started eating meat; we’re re-creating karma! Before, we were resolving karma; now we’re re-creating karma. When we hear talk about spiritual practice, we dismiss it, and then we go on even insulting those who practise spiritual cultivation!
And since we haven’t chosen any spiritual path to follow, we’re bound to go astray, get all bogged down, go downhill.
But later, after we die, we come to the stage of our spirit suffering. It’s our own spirit that we’re betraying, not the person who taught us the spiritual Path! There’s no need for that.
As for the saying in this world, “Betraying the Spiritual Way, betraying the Teacher,” that’s different! Betraying the Way, betraying the Teacher, means, let’s say: ‘I showed you how to practise the Vô Vi spiritual cultivation; you practiced; you got a hold of a Vô Vi group of a few dozen people, collecting a few dozen dollars each month’; for example, something like that; and now, lets say, you say: “This Vô Vi, Vô Vi C, is the correct one!” Vô Vi is incorrect, so you corrected it to Vô Vi C, and you went up to become the head of the sect yourself!
In the secular world, people learn from this monk and then steal the monk’s money; just like they come in to work for a shopkeeper, then they deceive the owner, to go up to become the boss themselves; that’s what it is!
Dao-37. 1: Is that “Deceiving the Teacher”?
Mr. Tám-37.1: Yes, “Deceiving one’s Teacher, betraying one’s friends”; that’s from a worldly perspective; that sin is even graver… It’s “Deceiving one’s Teacher, betraying one’s friends”; that’s how it is in this world.
As for spiritual cultivation practice, those who are currently practising, currently thinking they are pretty good at seeking the spiritual path, looking for something good to follow, but they are respectful and polite: “I would like to let you know:back then, I was very grateful to you; thanks to your guidance, I’ve now found this spiritual path to follow, like this, like this, like this; it’s much clearer!” Right? “I hope it will suit me, and I’ll return to contribute if you need my help! I find you are more dark, or perhaps not right for me.” See? “So now, may I ask permission for me to step over to the other side for a while to see how things will progress?” Right?
And naturally, when one looks for a path forward, there must be a path backward; this benefits the practitioner and does not sever the teacher-pupil bond, because when we practise the Vô Vi spiritual path whilst going about slandering the Buddhist temple, that’s completely wrong! Isn’t that right?
Vô Vi Friend-37.1: Yes.
Mr. Tám-37.2: In the past, thanks to the Buddhist temple, when we were feeling down, we would go up to the temple every week to eat vegetarian food, have some fun, and look at the various Buddha statues. Now that we’re allowed topractice spiritual cultivation through meditation, we’re going and curse the temple? That won’t do! And say, “I’m never going back to the temple”? That won’t do!
‘It was thanks to the blessings of that place that I was guided to know this spiritual path and practise it today!” Right? “It was thanks to it that I was guided forward. If not for that, I would have become mired in, say, the viciousness of the world! It was thanks to that place that I came to know spiritual cultivation practice and to love it, and so I found the spiritual path! How could I ever forget those memories? I must return. However well-off, wise or capable I may be, I must support the Buddhist temple so that it may endure forever for others who suffer and will come there, enabling them to progress!”
We remember how it was only through the Buddhist temple that we came to know a little about spiritual cultivation!
Though we might be at a high level of spiritual attainment now, and we say, “Buddhist temples are doing it wrong!” It’s not wrong at all!
It’s a history book meant to awaken living sentient beings; even if it does not talk, has no spiritual teacher, has nothing, the Buddhist temple still holds value; even if the temple’s roof and pillars are dilapidated, they still hold value! We should not criticise a Buddhist temple.
If there is any fault, it lies solely with the people within the temple; we cannot blame the temple itself! The temple is eternal! As for those who, as abbots, have done wrong, they must bear the consequences!
As for our own path, we must seek it ourselves; whether we accept it or not is up to us, not them! See? It is our fault, not theirs. You must understand this clearly! Do not blame others indiscriminately, speak nonsense, causing offence!
Back when we first learnt a little about the spiritual path, we really loved going to Buddhist temples! Everyone here loved going to temple too! Thanks to that influence, even just a little influence, we were able to discover the source of the spiritual path!
Anything else?
Vô Vi Friend-38: I don’t know … I was just wondering whether to ask… (Vô Vi Friend laughs) (inaudible …) to love one another and guide one another on the path of spiritual practice, do not be stubborn, do not be deluded, do not do anything that harms the Teacher, such as the past actions that caused him sorrow. Well, as today there are a number of fellow practitioners at the Bothell Meditation Center … to give guidance, … teach us how to more truly love one another, and how to practise spiritual cultivation so as to attain our spiritual goal, rather than competing for it?
Mr. Tám-38: On over 500 tapes, I have explained everything one must do to attain the Spiritual Path.
The most important thing is to know how to love and forgive.
Who should we love first?
Love ourselves! In loving ourselves, we can then take our physical body and embark on the path of spiritual cultivation! The crucial thing is that we know to love ourselves; only then can we take this physical body and embark on the path ofspiritual cultivation!
Then, having embarked on the spiritual cultivation path, if we cause conflict amongst fellow practitioners, it means we hate ourselves! We create more opponents who hate us! Isn’t that the same as us hating ourselves?
You might think, “I gain something by fighting back against others!” No!
“Of course others will fight back against me!” Do you see?
At first, “I brought and guided it to follow the path of spiritual cultivation because I love it; but now I’m making people hate it! How then can they possibly get to know my spirit? They only know the physical body, so they only curse the physical body! And then I wanted to eliminate tourmoil for the physical body, but now I’m actually creating more turmoil for the physical body!” There, do you see?
And so, amongst fellow practitioners, there is no forgiveness or love, nor is there listening to recordings by the personpromoting the Spiritual Cultivation Path!
So, in effect, they end up theorising on their own whilst caught in prejudice and delusion! Then neither the spiritual path is realised nor worldly affairs are resolved!
Vô Vi Friend-38: Yes.
Mr. Tám-39: That‘s why, there has been a shift in the spirit of Vô Vi everywhere: people have clashed with one another, and today the truth has dawned, revealing: “It turns out that we, who initially spoke of love, love for ourselves, have ultimately caused harm to ourselves! So, are we foolish or wise?”
Now, those friends have finally realised they were not wise! They sought a newer way of living, but it turns out, they have merely returned to creating a situation even worse than before!
Only then do they awaken, repent and reform; only then do they come to see that all brothers and sisters across the Heavens and Earth, even the beasts, live together on this one terrestrial globe, living day and night just as we have lived, living and breathing just as we have and are living, living while watching ourselves in order to awaken just as we have lived and are living!
That‘s why, all living beings possess the five vital organs just like we do, and can all be grouped together as one common type; we simply can no longer bear to separate them or create divisions and animosity!
That‘s why, the spiritual cultivation practitioners must attain some degree of serenity to understand themselves, savethemselves, and only then can they save others!
And once we have accepted to save ourselves, then naturally the spirit of harmony opens up!
Just as Brother Trọng said it: “Now that I practise spiritual cultivation, I love everyone. Having practised, I see that some people are in conflict and lack love; I deeply regret for them, they will head towards breakdown in the future!” So he offered a word or two, “Try to practise spiritual cultivation correctly, to awaken your hearts! We must strive to practise spiritual cultivation, for it helps us love ourselves which allows us to love others. When we do not yet know to love ourselves, whom can we love?”
That‘s why, ultimately, we must look after ourselves first, and only then can we influence others. We have the noble example of the Buddha: He saved sentient beings by awakening His own heart and saving Himself first, and only then did He influence sentient beings. There!
Today we wish to follow the Buddha, yet we do not meditate as He did, nor practise spiritual cultivation as He did; we just keep chattering, chattering, chattering arguments! So are we here to learn spiritual cultivation or to learn to gossip?
On the contrary, if we are here to learn to gossip, then we might as well just live in the world; why practise spiritualcultivation at all?
Practising spiritual cultivation must offer something better, then?
That‘s why, only when we do something entirely different from the ways of the world are we truly spiritual cultivation practitioners! Otherwise, being just like people of the world, how can we practice spiritual cultivation?
It is said that Vô Vi teaches ‘Simultaneous cultivation of worldly and spiritual life”.
“Worldly life” refers to this physical body: to stabilise this physical body is to bring peace to worldly life; so, when you sit still to meditate, that is worldly life.
Now, this physical body is ‘worldly life’; but when we restore order to this body, what does it become, what does it return to? It returns to spiritual life!
“Simultaneous cultivation of Spiritual and Worldly Life”! That‘s it!
But some might say: “Oh, Mr Tam says ‘Simultaneous cultivation of Spiritual and Worldly Life”; so I’ll go out drinking, have a few beers, go dancing! That’s ‘worldly life’!”
No, that‘s not it!
“Life”’ is the natural present-day existence experience, which is this mortal body; and if we know how to support thismortal body so that it returns to its proper order, then our spirit can become light and pure.
That‘s why, sitting in meditation is simultaneously cultivating wordly and spiritual life!
And if we are able to restore balance to both our physical body and our true heart while we are still carrying this physical form, then we can be said “to have attained ‘Liberation’. From there, we learn to forgive and love.
That‘s why, one must practise the correct spiritual cultivation! One should not alter the spiritual cultivation method, as that will harm oneself and harm others. One should introspectively and quietly borrow the spiritual cultivation practice!
So many virtuous examples have clearly come before our eyes: the images of Buddhas and Immortals who are far more gifted than we are, yet they are still devotedly practising meditation in silence in order to awaken their hearts.
Let‘s ask ourselves, what sort of beings are we that we should be superior to them?
We are inferior, more lowly than them, yet we do not know to cultivate spiritually; this is negligence!
Then, there’ll be no room for lamentation or recrimination!
That‘s why, everyone—from the divine to the ordinary—must all awaken their hearts and minds on their own, in order to find a solution!
If we refuse to awaken our hearts and minds, we will never be able to find a solution! We would only create suffering and forever reincarnation into the world.
Entities of the Spiritual World must themselves uphold and listen to the spiritual teachings in order to progress in their spiritual cultivation practice; let alone ordinary wordly people who are living in a defiled environment, they must sacrifice everything to awaken their minds and devote themselves to spiritual cultivation! How much more so do spiritual beings of the higher realms, if they refuse to (unclear...); that‘s why, they are drawn to the human physical body: any physical human body that can be invaded, inhabited, they will invade and reside in that human body in order to cultivate spiritually!
Each and all spiritual entities greatly value the human physical body, for they recognise that the current immense examination field and spiritual cultivation field is this human world. The human world which is replete with all necessary resources, all the means that help bring peace and freedom to both the human heart and the human body, thus they cherish the human body; they look for the human body, invade it in order to cultivate spiritually!
That‘s why, we have both physical body and spirit, but if we don’t know to devote to spiritual cultivation, one day our physical body and spirit will fall into turmoil, creating the opportunity for what is known as “losing both body and spirit”! It will take seven hundred million years to be reborn, so who knows when we will have the chance to discuss the spiritual path again?
That‘s why, as we have the blessed opportunity to study the Spiritual Path, we must study it, we must study it thoroughly, correctly and methodically; then we must practise it with integrity, and never slacken our efforts!
Do not try invite people; that will only create turmoil!
It’s better to have a small number of people dedicated to practicing the spiritual path, rather than to have a million people sitting and pouting nonsense! That’s what I say! So, all of you must be aware of this.
Back then, the Buddha set out practicing spiritual cultivation alone; there were four or five people sitting in the desert, but He was the only one practicing; He didn’t care, He didn’t invite so-and-so, A or B; He sat, He looked for a tree to sit beneath, all by himself.
Now we, too, can find the path within our own consciousness; we sit quietly within our own families; there are also five or or people, four or five people, but with just only practicing spiritual cultivation, just like that group of long ago—and if we are resolute, we too will attain enlightenment and guide those around us; and from there, it will spread!
We set an example for everyone, then they, on their own, look for their true nature; only then do they have the opportunity to evolve; that’s called, “Relieve suffering, bestowing joy -- To help and rescue sentient beings.”
That‘s why, when this opportunity arises, you must seize it and practice spiritual cultivation, practise it an orderly manner.
Remember this well: Living for a few decades is very short—not a long time! Don’t think that living to the age of seventy is a great deal! It is not at all! It’s merely a few days in Heaven: one year is one day; how many days does that add up to? And in one hour, in one day, how many hours do we actually practice spiritual cultivation?
We won’t have time to practise enough!
That‘s why, do your best, do your best to hold on to your spiritual awakening, so that you may attain a favourable opportunity the next time around: even if your spiritual cultivation practice will not be successful, it will not be the end of the world.
Why not the end of the world?
Because if we know how to cultivate our spiritual path, we’ll have another chance in the next life!
