Bạn đạo: Mỗi một khi thiền như vậy là cần theo thứ tự là: Nguyện; rồi đến Soi Hồn; rồi đến chuyển Pháp Luân;
Đức Thầy: Dạ. À, người mới tu á, thì chỉ Nguyện, rồi Soi Hồn, là làm cho ổn định những cái thần kinh; rồi nằm, làm cái pháp Chiếu Minh để cho nó ổn định Ngũ Tạng. Rồi sau này mình mới đi lần lần tới mấy cái đó. Bởi vì, hai Pháp trước hết;
Đức Thầy: Không có bắt buộc;
Bạn đạo: Có người manager họ lo cái chuyện đó;
Bạn đạo: Dạ thưa Ông Tám, khi nào Ông Tám có mặt ở đây đó, thì nó đông người như vầy;
Đức Thầy: Ừ, muốn hỏi cái Hội Long Hoa thì phải hiểu cái Hội Long Vân. Long Vân là Việt Nam bây giờ đang Long Vân đó. Há? Bay như rồng đó; cột đèn nó biết đi nó cũng đi luôn! Phải Long Vân không? Lúc đó mới thấy, "Long Hoa ở nơi mà nội tâm chúng ta đón rước thanh nhẹ." Nghe cái đó rõ chưa? Chớ không phải Long Hoa là nó làm cái chợ Long Hoa, rồi rốt cuộc bây giờ oánh nát hết, chợ Long Hoa không còn nữa!
Bạn đạo: Dạ thưa Thầy, ngày hôm nay tôi xin hỏi Thầy chỉ cho một vài cái mà trong cái lúc Soi Hồn gặp;
Đức Thầy: Dạ.
Bạn đạo: Ðể Thầy chỉ dạy cho; là một;
Đức Thầy: Dạ.
Bạn đạo: Và cái thứ hai, là có vài đề nghị về cái pháp môn của mình.
Đức Thầy: Ừ?
Bạn đạo: Và cái thứ ba nữa là xin biếu Thầy cuốn sách.
Đức Thầy: Dạ.
Bạn đạo: Thưa Thầy, vì tôi là gần 60 tuổi thành ra tu nó, bây giờ già yếu rồi, thành ra nó run;
Đức Thầy: Dạ.
Bạn đạo: Nó run, thành ra khi mà tôi bỏ hai cái ngón tay cái vào đây,
Đức Thầy: Ừ.
Bạn đạo: Và bắt như thế này,
Đức Thầy: Ừ, ừ.
Bạn đạo: Và ấn như thế này mà kéo ra, thì một lúc những cái ngón này nó cứ rung lên;
Đức Thầy: Ừ, ừ.
Bạn đạo: Thì cái tay nó không đủ sức cứng, nó cứ rung;
Đức Thầy: Mà mình phải chiến thắng, một ngày được một phút;
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Rồi mới tăng lên;
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Bởi vì ở đây là cái tập quán;
Đức Thầy: Bằng đầu cái ông võ sĩ kia ổng cho nửa ký lô; sau, 1 kí lô; rồi 2 kí lô;
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Rồi ổng cử tạ tới 100 kí lô.
Bạn đạo: Mà sao con khó chịu nhất là cái quãng nửa cái lưng này;
Đức Thầy: Ừ.
Bạn đạo: Tức là có lúc nó đau nhói ở cái chỗ phía đằng sau lưng này;
Đức Thầy: À;
Bạn đạo: Hay là cứ ngồi yên?
Đức Thầy: Cứ ngồi yên; ngồi yên cho hết; rồi mình mới cựa.
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Khi mình xả đó, mình mới cựa.
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Bởi vì đó là những caí, khi mà mình Soi Hồn như vậy á,
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Nó giải tỏa cái nóng ở trong gan;
Bạn đạo: Dạ vâng.
Đức Thầy: Cho nên, nó chạy lung tung; cái huyệt đó là cái huyệt gan đó;
Bạn đạo: Dạ vâng; nó đau ghê lắm;
Đức Thầy: Cái huyệt gan, chỗ đó nó đau;
Đức Thầy: Bởi vì Ông nóng, ở trong đó nó bón, nóng;
Đức Thầy: Hiện tại chúng tôi tại Canada, có; Paris, có; a, Los Angeles, có;
Đức Thầy: Dạ, được chớ; được; cái đó là;
Đức Thầy: Ở đó nó vừa in nhiều lắm đó;
Bạn đạo: Dạ.
Đức Thầy: Vừa in cả ngàn cuốn "Tôi Tầm Ðạo" này; cũng, tất cả những người chúng tôi đều là đi làm công hết, ở đợ đi kiếm chút đỉnh tiền mà phổ biến cái Ðạo Pháp thôi. Nghĩa là phổ biến cho người đó hữu ích, chớ không có cho cá nhân chúng tôi được hưởng cái gì hết;
Bạn đạo: Thưa Thầy, (36’’21- không nghe rõ) Bây giờ xin phép hỏi về thể dục;
Đức Thầy:Sau thì nó đi hết, không có; những người nào làm được cái đó, làm cho;
Đức Thầy: Rút cái con trê lên;
Bạn đạo: Có nhiều người Thiền, nhưng mà theo cái phương pháp nội công, hay là những cái phương pháp mà Yoga khác;
Bạn đạo: Trong khi mình đang Thiền giác đó, thì tự nhiên trên bộ đầu mình thấy như là gió bão;
Bạn đạo: Dạ, thưa Thầy, sao con cứ thích cái Thượng Nguơn, Trung Nguơn, Hạ Nguơn;
Đức Thầy: Phải rồi; phải học được cái bài học;

SPIRITUAL QUESTIONS FROM FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Volume 4
The Master: Each and every individual must seek the true essence for themselves; they must cultivate wisdom so that we may progress towards clearly discerning the path of wisdom. We always say, ‘Wisdom’—it is very easy to say, but putting it into practice is very difficult. Therefore, to fulfil this requirement, everyone must be aware, first and foremost, of their own mistakes; if we are willing to openly correct them, we will certainly ascend more easily and gracefully. Moreover, ‘If I am stubborn, I merely stifle and hinder the progress of my own spiritual development.’ Therefore, in our spiritual practice, we must put this Dharma into action; it is only through cultivating wisdom that we can move from the material realm to the spiritual realm: our spirit must govern matter, not the other way round. Therefore, by cultivating that wisdom, we shall attain infinite wisdom; whilst always being clearly aware that, of all the past journeys of spiritual leaders who have attained the Dharma and left a legacy for us, they have achieved only a fraction of courage; having practised Compassion, Wisdom and Courage, and having attained Courage as the ultimate goal, we realise that it is Courage alone that we lack. As age increasingly overtakes us, moving ever forward and never retreating, we must use our courageous wisdom to return to the original, enlightened state of a Celestial Boy and a Celestial Maiden, so that we may learn within the gentle and enlightened truth.
Therefore, today I have had the opportunity to come here for the second time to discuss matters with you all; yet I hope that you will have inner questions to share, for only then can we learn together and evolve more easily: if we merely listen to someone speak without seeking answers to resolve our inner doubts, then we have not yet made any progress. Therefore, there must be a sense of inquiry and a willingness to learn through our questions, and we must explore these questions fully; only then will we succeed. I hope you have questions you wish to ask; I am ready to answer them regarding the current Practice Method.
Fellow practitioner: Dear Teacher, ladies and gentlemen; dear Teacher, ladies and gentlemen; we have heard that you have come all the way from Canada to give a talk on Zen; please allow us to raise a few queries for the Master and all of you to consider: firstly, we wish to practise Zen, but there are a few obstacles: the first is that sitting like this causes our legs to go numb, and to resolve this issue, might we sit on a chair or practise lying down meditation instead? May the Master please advise.
The Venerable Master: We do have a method for sitting on a chair, and it is printed in the booklet ‘Methods of Practice’. Anyone who is unable to sit cross-legged may sit on a chair. Please take a closer look at the booklet ‘Explanation of Practice’; the sitting method is described there. Now, now, here it is: those who practise this meditation will not necessarily prefer to sit cross-legged; if they are able to sit cross-legged, they will endeavour to achieve that posture: it is beneficial for the kidneys; it helps with back pain. However, sitting on a chair is also acceptable.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Cross your legs like this; there.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Well, the Gong Fu manual explains it clearly, very clearly indeed.
Disciple: Yes, thank you, Master.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: Yes, the second point: regarding age, we grow older every day, and perhaps, in that method of meditation, as described in the book *I Seek the Way*—which I have read—it says, ‘Tooth to tooth.’ When we have a damaged tooth and get dentures fitted; this means that the dentures cover the acupoint on the upper jaw, so that if you lift your tongue, it gets caught on the, the, the dentures. So, when practising meditation, should we leave it as it is, or remove the dentures, or must we use those braces to ensure the acupoint—that is, the, the, the, the one where the tongue rests—is unobstructed?
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: Please guide us, Master.
The Master: Ah, that is; to understand that, consider the person who has a broken arm:
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: Once their arm is broken, they make a prosthetic arm; but when they scratch the prosthetic arm, they still feel the itch! So with our teeth, we keep the false teeth in place, so that tooth meets tooth, sealing off the breath, but that energy current is still connected—it doesn’t break off. Therefore, many people who wear dentures still find that the energy flows freely! Because here, as we enter the realm of energy, there is no such thing as the soul’s teeth falling out; in the realm of energy, teeth do not fall out! It is only this physical body that loses its teeth. Therefore, the energy current remains connected. That is why you can clearly see that people who have broken arms or legs often find that when they scratch their prosthetic leg, it itches; or when they scratch their prosthetic arm, the itching stops. That is a clear proof: that energy flow is never severed.
Disciple: Is it still possible to keep it, Master?
The Master: Yes, it is acceptable. Yes.
Disciple: Master, the third sentence—the final one:
The Master: Yes.
Fellow practitioner: Whenever you meditate in this way, you must follow this sequence: Aspiration; then Soul Contemplation; then turning the Dharma Wheel;
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: And finally, Meditation.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: May I ask, is it possible to practise one of these disciplines separately?
The Master: Yes. Well, for new practitioners, one should start with the Prayer and then the Soul Contemplation to stabilise the nerves; then, whilst lying down, practise the Chiếu Minh method to stabilise the Five Organs. Only later should one gradually progress to the other practices. Because these two methods come first;
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: Later, when you wish to learn, your fellow practitioners will guide you,
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: For beginners. So practise, and you’ll find your mind stabilises, then your five viscera stabilise—that’s it. Therefore, regarding the digestive system—as we get older, we need good digestion. And when you practise the ‘Chiếu Minh’ method, lying down and breathing like that, see for yourself: ‘Is eating and drinking easier for me now than before? Am I feeling healthier? Are my bowel movements and urination good? And as for my nervous system and brain, the more I cover this ear, the more I hear a ‘ringing’; but gradually the ‘ringing’ will subside; I notice my hot-tempered nature has lessened; it has returned to clarity.” It was only then that he added another sitting meditation practice, the Dharma Wheel. But now, in the early stages, it isn’t necessary to start meditating straight away.
Fellow practitioner: Yes. Regarding the issue of, for example, vegetarianism and eating meat.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: Master, is there a difference between a vegetarian diet and a non-vegetarian diet?
The Venerable Master: A vegetarian diet is, in a sense, a method of healing: up until now, having eaten meat, one has ingested a great deal of the impure energy of animals. Now, by changing one’s diet, it can also cure many ailments within the internal organs. Furthermore, for those who cannot practise a vegetarian diet, they should continue to practise this Method; gradually, through the Dharma Wheel—that is, the breathing technique—as they draw in more pure, nourishing energy, they will realise that consuming impure food is no longer necessary. At that point, their cravings will naturally diminish; and when they switch to eating vegetables and herbs—that is, a vegetarian diet—they will find they are not tired; they will feel healthy. Therefore, there are two practices here: ‘Soi Hồn’ and ‘Chiếu Minh’, which form the Dharma Wheel; this will unblock the Five Organs and increase the nourishing energy within them, at which point we can reduce our intake; this happens automatically, not by compulsion. This must happen automatically: if there is a deficiency, it increases; if there is an excess, it decreases. There you have it—it follows scientific principles; that is how it is.
Fellow practitioner: Yes. (8:05 – inaudible)
The Venerable Master: No. No; well, for now, you should just practise meditation, but in your own room—and it’s even better if you’re bare-chested! Wearing just a pair of briefs is enough; there’s no need for ceremonial robes. ‘Is your heart reverent towards the Buddha?’ Because even if you wear ceremonial robes but your heart isn’t turned towards the Buddha, it’s all for nothing! Isn’t that so?
Fellow practitioner: Yes.
The Venerable Master: Because we are returning to our original nature, and now that we are getting on in years, we realise, ‘I must definitely leave. But I have to complete this course;’ Right? ‘I must build up my strength to sit the next exam!’ (unclear)
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Venerable Master: Thank you, Sir.
Disciple: Master, um, the book says we have to get up at midnight.
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: And is that time mandatory, or is it optional?
The Master: It is not mandatory;
Fellow Practitioner: I see.
The Master: It is not compulsory; for new practitioners, it is not compulsory. But gradually, as practitioners gain experience, they realise, ‘After I’ve eaten—say, seven or eight o’clock in the evening—if I sit and practise breathing at midnight, I feel healthier.’ That is why; the midnight session is to accommodate those who work long hours, so that they have time to practise breathing at night to maintain their health; it is simply to avoid causing trouble within the family! Nowadays, for those who have the means—and there are many people who work day shifts or night shifts—they can practise meditation even during the day shift. Therefore, the time is not fixed; but we must remember that we should only practise breathing exercises three hours after a meal. Yes.
Fellow practitioner: I’m asking this because there are many people who work at night.
The Master: Yes, that’s right. This helps to dispel the stagnant energy within the internal organs and the head. Yes.
Fellow practitioner: Thank you, Master.
The Master: Yes. Does anyone else have any questions?
Disciple: Yes, Master, may I ask a question?
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Yes, I am a Protestant,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: But I hold you in the highest regard,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: And I love this form of meditation.
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: However, in the Holy Bible of Jesus Christ, it is stated that I must not worship any idols,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Nor can one recite any prayer,
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Believer: Apart from the Bible,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Which Jesus taught. So, before sitting in meditation, one should pray,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: So, I feel that this prayer seems to contradict what is in the Bible
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Believer: Which I have learnt; so I am very hesitant. Therefore, I do not know how to practise meditation. Please explain, Master.
The Master: So, when you think of the Lord, and you think of liberation—which is the Lord reminding you of the immortal soul—then this practice poses no obstacle, because it is about restoring order to receive the enlightened truths the Lord has bestowed; and we must attain liberation. Now, often people say, ‘Well, I do not accept those things now,’ yet in doing so, one is still clinging to the concept of ‘divine energy’: for this ‘divine energy’ consists merely of two currents—one flowing out and one flowing in; but this impression is used to instil reverence in the human heart, to serve as a guide. But ask yourself: does Quan Âm quarrel with Jesus Christ? Does Maitreya quarrel with Jesus Christ? God and Heaven do not cause any strife! All of this is benevolence and leads us to enlightenment. Therefore, given our nature as Vietnamese people, as East Asians, we must borrow an East Asian approach to explain it; but in truth, it is merely two streams of energy, nothing more. Therefore, the sounds you speak of—sounds coming in and going out, heavy sounds and light sounds—are merely currents; there is nothing to them. Therefore, on this side, once we have advanced in our practice and broken through delusion and attachment, such things hold no significance for us; do you see? Because ‘Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva’ is something you only perceive once you have risen to a higher level and glimpsed the darkness within your own mind; ah, ‘Maitreya’ signifies Supreme Goodness and Bliss; ah, ‘Long Hoa’ represents the inner clarity that we have long neglected; it is a current of energy that, as we ascend, we come to see clearly; that; that, too, is merely the stream of enlightenment that opens the way.
But one might ask: why do they say over there, ‘Do not believe in false teachings; if you do, you will be cast into Hell’? And now so many people have seen for themselves: they have tried time and again, for so many years; yet they have seen that it leads nowhere, and they still do not understand ‘Who am I?’ Therefore, out of the desire to be close to the One—the Saviour whom we long to meet—now that we have the opportunity to restore order, we should restore order so as to clearly perceive the soul, and see that the Bible has spoken clearly, without a single word of error. There must be purity and order; only then, upon re-reading the Bible, will we see its immeasurable value. Therefore, the Bible never condemns, but those who practise it may condemn themselves out of fear: ‘I’m afraid of this one, so I’m asking You to save me! Ah! I’m afraid the ghost will take me; I must believe in the Lord so that He may save me!’ That is ‘I am afraid’; it is not ‘the Lord is afraid’. For the Lord never bestows the Grace of Fear upon anyone! The Lord calls upon people to press on courageously to attain salvation; it is as clear as that! Now, as for us, our consciousness: human beings live with this awareness; if you lack this awareness, you cannot come here to speak with us; and if I lack this awareness, I would never answer you; do you see? We possess consciousness; we simply examine whether it is still or active; that is all. That is the soul, our very foundation. Therefore, if you have the opportunity to restore order, you should examine it carefully; and what we are doing here is entirely about dispelling delusion and breaking through attachments—we do not foster superstition. But anyone who is superstitious, who asks for blessings for this or that, is exempt from practising this Dharma; if they practise this Dharma, they will be possessed by demons—just bear with it: if you have a house and a door, and invite demons to dance in, then they will possess you! Whereas here, we simply press forward to purify the inherent impurities within ourselves and to understand our own true nature. There you have it. So, you need not recite mantras; but performing those movements is no different from reciting mantras, because those movements also re-establish order, just as reciting mantras does. Do you see?
Fellow practitioner: Yes, revered Teacher, the gate of death is the inevitable gateway for human beings born into this world; and to prepare for passing through that gate of death, there is illness: everyone dies as a result of some illness. But, Teacher, the mind gives rise to illness, the nature gives rise to illness; excuse me, ‘the nature gives rise to illness.’ It is our fundamental nature—Greed, Anger, Delusion, Joy, Rage, Desire—that gives rise to illness. Now, thanks to this Dharma method, we can stabilise our internal organs; in other words, we can acquire a natural method for healing illness; yet even if we were to cure all the illnesses within our internal organs, we still cannot escape death. In that case, may the Master please explain the peaceful passing of a practitioner—that is, of one who is free from worldly ailments and the ailments of the physical body? Thank you, Master.
The Master: Because human beings know that their wisdom is boundless, they must cultivate that wisdom; then they will walk in wisdom. And whilst walking this path and living their lives, they control the physical body through wisdom, neither nurturing delusion nor disturbing the inner mind and internal organs; thus, illness will certainly be minimised. However, that wisdom, fundamentally, as I say ‘Dying before death’—that is, we leave the body before we depart; for those practising this Dharma, it is gentler and more definitive . If one is aware that one’s will is infinite, then one has cultivated it before departing, one has attained liberation before departing; thus, death no longer exists for them.
Fellow practitioner: Yes.
The Master: To live like this is to be free from death! Always alive, with a soul that remains fresh and lucid, accepting every circumstance that arises; every lesson that comes is resolved and clarified; so where is there any spiritual distress or suffering left? There is none! Therefore, the will transcends all obstacles—that is the truth. Does anyone have any further questions?
Fellow devotee: Yes, Mr Tam,
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Practitioner: Yes, back home, it’s done the Vietnamese way,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: Well, there was nothing called an ‘organisation’ at all.
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Believer: But I’ve noticed over here, in this country, the United States,
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Believer: Well, whatever they do, it has to be organised,
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Believer: To make it proper,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: That’s why many people ask why this practice established by Mr Tam, despite having so many followers, has no organisation at all?
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Yes, may I respectfully ask Mr Tam, should we establish an organisation?
The Master: Here, I mean, our numbers started small, then gradually grew, so naturally there had to be some order. But now all the fellow practitioners here have also begun to seek permission to establish the ‘Vô Vi Friendship Association’—a group of fellow practitioners sitting together to exchange ideas; not to ‘control’; there is no hierarchy; merely “exchanging ideas to elevate one another”: whether one has practised for a long time or is new to the path, it is the same—all exchange ideas and evolve, which brings about fairness within the Dharma. Therefore, I am merely establishing the ‘Wuwei Friendship Society’, not the ‘Way of Wuwei’! The ‘Way’ is that everyone must return to Wuwei; that Way—whoever practises it, that person benefits! Ah; that person is the master of that Way, and bears the responsibility. Because if that person is lazy, it is pointless to impart the Dharma to them! After all, we’re not here to offer empty words or comfort them, are we? We’re calling on them to practise! But if that person is lazy, how can we control them? Because they practise at home; they don’t come before us to practise so we can control them. That is why we do not have such an organisation. If we were to organise that, we’d have to charge money: ‘For every hour you sit with me to practise meditation, you pay so much.’ That would be ‘selling the Dharma for profit!’ We cannot do that. We must all live within the wider community, earn a living, endure our own suffering, and evolve.
Fellow practitioner: Some people have suggested this: they say, “If we set up the Ái Hữu, no one will take full responsibility. There must be someone to act as manager,” so that person would handle the management,
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: A manager would take care of that;
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: They’d need a certain amount of money to handle those matters for us,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: When they have spare time, they must attend to that matter.
The Master: Yes. So, we can clearly see that the spiritual aspect is important. If everyone were to be aware of their own spiritual aspect, then the whole world would be managed solely by God.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: Ordinary people cannot manage it; because we practise the Way of Non-Action; if we were to place human beings in control over us, then we would have no need to practise. We might as well just live like that – it would be far more enjoyable! I am telling you this in all sincerity. Therefore, people have practised incorrectly, strayed from the path! Yet, having practised up to this day, having paid so much for a course, in the end they know nothing at all! Whereas we, practising in this way of self-discipline, find joy in clarity; and our resolve is in harmony, so natural, filled with boundless love, and full of vitality. That is true spiritual practice!
Fellow practitioner: Yes, Mr Tam, whenever you’re here, there’s always such a large crowd;
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: But when you’re not here, it all falls apart; then everyone,
The Master: No! Because each person must return to their own path to practise. The Buddhas and Immortals do not follow us! If we call upon them, they will come; because we have returned to the supernatural, returned to the Way of Non-Action, so we sit at home and say, ‘If there truly are Buddhas and Immortals, let them come; if there are no Buddhas or Immortals, then do not disturb me.’ Do you see? Therefore, we must face that trial; it is through that that we make progress on our own. As for holding large gatherings, they’re just for arguing and serve no purpose! That’s why I say, ‘Do what is necessary, and let us not do what is unnecessary.’ Why did we establish the Wu Wei Society? Because Vietnam is currently suffering; our friends who have escaped Vietnam have no one to help them; so, can we call on one person to shoulder the burden? It’s impossible! We’re here to sweep the garden, to tidy up, to work as labourers just to make a living; and only gradually do we manage to climb up to that tiny little position—and even then, we’re still up to our necks in debt. No one is truly happy. So, if each person can contribute five cắc, that is valuable; it’s fine, it’s valuable (unclear) for them. That’s all we need—just a little bit; and when it’s useful, when it’s needed, we’ll use it; if not, then we won’t. But if we organise, then deceive one another, then fall out with one another—it’s pointless! We do not approve of that sort of thing! Therefore, voluntary organisations are non-profit; the US government has them; the Canadian government has them; non-profit organisations exist all over the world. But it is the sincerity of everyone’s intentions that matters; if there is no sincerity, then there’s no point in going to that place to sit around —it’s just tiring, a waste of effort, and leads to resentment and all sorts of suspicion. Here, people have a sincere intention; we simply come here and feel at ease. But if they lack that sincere intention, they organise this and that, make all sorts of claims, and then lord it over others! It’s pointless! We do not approve of such behaviour, because we are practitioners; we ought to be ‘practising and progressing on our own’ in the mountains and suchlike; but now the Divine Plan has revealed to us that we must bring people closer together, and make them clearly see that they are the Infinite Being—we must not forget them any longer; it would be such a waste! Remind them, ‘Go and practise!’ Whether they accept it or not is their right to live; we cannot force anyone to practise; and there is no ‘using the Way to shape one’s life’: we do not use that to sustain ourselves; no! Because that is the eternal life that has nourished our souls, which God has bestowed upon us (22:31 – inaudible)
Fellow believer: Yes, Mr Tam, whilst you’re here, the gathering is so large; but once you’ve gone, what will the new believers do—who will they ask now?
The Master: Because in each area they will ask; there are contact details; as in the book *I Seek the Way*, they all ask; then they gradually guide one another; then they return; because they have an independent mind; they will consider, ‘Is this useful to me? Do I accept it or not?’ Therefore, that is simply a matter of practical reality; it is a matter of practical reality alone. So, often when I come here, you come here to exchange ideas and see, to some extent, the lightness in me; you wish to attain that. That is a precious thing; but it is only temporary; ultimately, you must build that lightness within yourselves, just as I have. My wish is the same; the Superiors’ wish is the same. So, do not worry about the issue of, ‘There will be no one in the future!’ In the past, there was the Buddha Śākyamuni! That’s over now; now there is Mr Tam speaking like this; isn’t that so? Soon there will also be some monks in his temple speaking like this! Here too, there will be priests in his church speaking like this! So wherever it is, in due course, where there is nothing now, there will be something. We mustn’t worry about worldly matters, then get stuck in them, and become greedy; the Way—that is, taking a bit from here, a bit from there—until it all falls apart! It’s just like what I see in Canada now—they’re raising money for them; churches these days have to run lotteries just to cover their expenses (laughs). The place is too big, yet no one comes; that’s a real struggle, a real hardship for them. They don’t trust the leadership; now they have no direction at all; they say, ‘I’ve been praying constantly but nothing has come of it,’ so they refuse to accept it! See? We aren’t being superstitious now; we’re helping to support everyone’s spirits: living amidst life’s hardships, yet without growing weary; that’s what’s important. Everyone is becoming aware, cultivating their minds, and stabilising their Five Organs. Struggling with life—how could one ever grow weary of it? You are someone who has truly struggled with life: coming all the way from Vietnam to here, how much you’ve had to struggle! And in the end, you’re still as young and handsome as you were in Vietnam, aren’t you? Just looking at you is enough; there’s no need to look for anyone else, is there? (laughs).
Fellow practitioner: Yes, Mr Tam, I’m worried about these newcomers; they’ve only just arrived here; they don’t know you.
The Master: Don’t worry; because I, too, was a newcomer once, and I’ve made it this far; so you, too, were a newcomer once, and you’ve made it this far. Who looks after us? Heaven does! Mortals don’t worry about such things!
Fellow Believer: Back then, did Mr Tam come every week,
The Master: No, we didn’t eat together at all! (laughs).
Fellow Believer: That’s why I hope Mr Tam will come back here once a year!
The Master: That is a matter of desire: ‘Where there is karmic affinity, one may meet across a thousand miles; where there is none, one may stand face to face yet never meet.’ That is how it is. Even now, sitting here together, if someone does not like this, no amount of talking will make them listen. Therefore, we need not overdo it, lest we cause confusion. But we need people who are conscious and recognise their responsibility towards themselves; we need people who clearly realise that they must take responsibility for themselves, rather than for others. If it’s responsibility towards others, then (25:15 – inaudible) where is it? Do you see? One person takes responsibility in this way, another does it better; so we accept this one. No, the Buddha did not do that. People in the world have accepted this, and so they create chaos. Meanwhile, the major religions also suffer from these very problems; it is a great source of suffering! They cannot resolve them; it’s too late, it’s already too late; they cannot resolve them. Therefore, when we see these points, before we set out to work (25:37 – inaudible), we must face up to and shoulder all obstacles, then clear the way for ourselves – that is enough; it is enough for each individual to understand this.
Fellow Believer: Thank you, Mr Tam, for clarifying this for the new brothers and sisters.
The Master: Yes, thank you very much, Brother. Those are the kinds of questions that people in the world wish to bring up and spread; that is how it is.
Fellow Believer: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Yes, please, goodbye, Mr Tam.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: We would like to ask a few questions:
The Master: Yes.
Fellow believer: Those books make mention of the Long Hoa Society.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Now that Mr Tam is here, could he please explain in clear terms the details regarding the Long Hoa Assembly? Is it a court of law to judge people in the mortal world? Those who are guilty will go to work,
The Master: Yes, if you want to ask about the Long Hoa Assembly, you must first understand the Long Vân Assembly. Long Vân is Vietnam—it is currently in the Long Vân phase. Isn’t it? It’s soaring like a dragon; even the lampposts would walk if they could! Is it Long Vân, isn’t it? Ah. Well, later on, once things have been restored, we’ll return to being honest, loving, and living together; everyone will know how to cultivate themselves and improve; only then will we clearly see the Long Hoa Assembly. Don’t go thinking that the Long Hoa Assembly is something where we just jump in and think we’ll have a status, get sweets or cakes or something? No! Because ‘cultivating the mind and nurturing one’s nature’ brings wisdom and lightness; only then will those people be able to participate in the Long Hoa Assembly, which is about love (25:37 – inaudible), in this world. People in this world know how to love other people in this world; this applies to all of humanity, not just oneself. That’s it. Therefore, everything in this world involves conflict and reconciliation; gradually progressing, step by step, mending things bit by bit; until the Long Hoa Assembly is realised—which is nothing but love and morality. Therefore, only those who practise, who understand the soul and transcend the mundane, freeing themselves from the Lower, Middle and Upper realms of this physical body, can be called ‘stable and enlightened’. Only then will one realise, ‘Long Hoa resides where our inner selves welcome it with lightness and serenity.’ Do you understand that clearly? It is not that Long Hoa is some sort of Long Hoa market, which has now been completely destroyed, leaving no Long Hoa market at all! Ah; that is not what Long Hoa is (27:55 – inaudible)
Fellow Practitioner: Yes, Master, today I would like to ask you to clarify a few things that arose during the Soul-Illumination session;
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: So that you may instruct me; firstly;
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: And the second point is that I have a few suggestions regarding our spiritual practice.
The Master: Hmm?
Fellow devotee: And the third thing is to present the Master with a book.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: Master, as I am nearly 60 years old, I have been practising for a long time, but now that I am old and frail, my hands shake;
The Venerable Master: I see.
Fellow devotee: My hands shake, so when I place my two thumbs here,
The Master: Right.
Fellow Practitioner: And grip it like this,
The Master: Yes, yes.
Fellow Believer: And press like this whilst pulling it out, then after a while these fingers just keep trembling;
The Master: Yes, yes.
Fellow Believer: Well, the hand isn’t strong enough, so it just keeps trembling;
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: And when it vibrates like that, it also creates a rhythmic pulsing in the ear,
The Master: Yes, yes.
Fellow Practitioner: “Hum, hum,” just like a drum. So, Master, is that all right?
The Master: It’s fine; keep trying; because we’re practising it! Now it can last for three minutes,
Disciple: Yes, Master.
The Master: So let’s give it three minutes.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: But we must overcome it, one minute a day;
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Then we’ll increase it;
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Because this is a habit;
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: It’s simply a matter of flexibility.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: To begin with, that martial artist was given half a kilo; then, one kilo; then two kilos;
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Then he lifted up to 100 kilograms.
Disciple: But what bothers me most is this area around the middle of my back;
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: I mean, sometimes it gives me a sharp pain right here at the back;
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: It hurts; can I move around a bit?
The Master: Well;
Fellow Believer: Or should I just sit still?
The Master: Just sit still; sit still until it passes; then you can move.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: When you let go, then you can move.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Because those are the things—when you ‘Illuminate the Soul’ in that way,
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: It relieves the heat in the liver;
Disciple: Yes, sir.
The Master: That is why it’s all over the place; that acupoint is the liver acupoint;
Disciple: Yes, sir; it’s terribly painful;
The Master: The liver acupoint—that’s where it hurts;
The Master: Because you’re hot, it’s congested and hot in there;
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: It has only just developed this condition. So, what should we do now? Now we must relieve it; relieve it, whilst treating the liver, and you must treat it yourself: use the energy to treat it.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: So, it goes ‘Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh’; as the energy surges upwards, we push it down; it surges upwards, we push it down; to filter it. Once filtered, it flows along and returns to its, its, its acupoint. There; as a result, its vibrational force is strong, and it no longer hurts.
Disciple: Yes,
The Master: But in the early stages, you must make an effort, try your very best, and fight hard to achieve it. Because we are restoring order: up until now, we have neglected ourselves and focused on external matters; and ultimately, we have caused damage within ourselves.
Disciple: Yes,
The Master: Now, as people say, ‘There is a beautiful house,’ isn’t there?
Disciple: Yes,
The Master: Yet we abandoned it; the thatched house; in the old days, people would say, ‘Heaven gave me a thatched house, but it was too shabby, so I abandoned it; I went out into the world;’
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: ‘In this land, that land.’ But when others see that one’s house possesses the blessings of the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the light of the Buddhas, yet one abandons it—when people ask for one’s house and one refuses to give it, feeling regret—and when one returns, what will one find? One’s house will be overgrown with weeds, the path blocked, and one will not be able to enter the door! Then you must cut them down and clear the house, so that you have a place to enter and take your rightful place; that is how it is. Therefore, our practice here is spiritual cultivation, and in truth, this ‘Microcosm’ is where we are the masters.
Fellow practitioner: Yes.
The Master: The king of a realm,
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: Not, not, not dependent on anyone at all. Therefore, we must follow the order of Great Nature; and bring that order of Great Nature back, to harmonise and resolve this ‘Little Heaven and Earth’.
Disciple: Yes.
Disciple: With all due respect, Master, (inaudible – 31’03)
The Master: Yes.
Fellow practitioner: We understand that, based on the observations made during the days when you were here, (inaudible – 31’03)
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: The general opinion amongst some practitioners is that whenever Master Tam comes here, everyone gathers in large numbers, but afterwards, when Master Tam leaves, (31’30 – inaudible) it takes on a more personal nature,
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: And especially with regard to you, Master. So, Master, in our personal opinion, and that of a few other brothers as well (31’40 – inaudible). A monthly magazine is published,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Secondly, regarding the journey – where is the Master heading?
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: And thirdly, do the fellow believers encounter any obstacles,
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Or are there any phenomena that might be brought into it?
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Believer: Or are there any queries regarding the body responsible for disseminating directives and opinions (32’27 – inaudible) in other places as well (inaudible)?
The Master: At present, we have one in Canada; one in Paris; and one in Los Angeles;
Disciple: Yes.
The Venerable Master: San José, yes. So in those places, whatever can be answered or resolved, they resolve it; if they cannot resolve it, they send it to me. As for every week, I have a sermon,
Fellow Believer: Yes.
The Master: It’s just like at the place where you go for acupuncture—(33:24 – inaudible)—if you ask them to send them to you every week, they’ll send the full set. There are tapes containing my voice, wherever I go, whatever I preach, and people’s questions; that’s it. We can also draw on this experience and contribute to humanity; that is what matters. Therefore, these tapes are very useful; and even in these various refugee camps here and there, when they receive them, they are very pleased. We also try our best, doing what we can within our means: contributing a little money towards copying the tapes, this and that; then we send donations according to our means. As for me, I travel here and there; it’s not just to preach the Dharma; often I also have to go and treat people who are spiritually compatible with us; I help them, and they cover the costs; that money I then use to send gifts back to our dear fellow practitioners who are stranded over there; and some of the money I use to publish books and so on. As for me, I don’t have the chance to spend any money (laughs).
Fellow devotee: (33:54 – inaudible)
The Master: Yes. Because we want to discover the true nature and potential of people: one must do something oneself to contribute, rather than just sitting there practising and then enjoying the benefits! We don’t do that sort of thing!
Fellow devotee: (34’00–34’12 – inaudible)
The Master: Yes, it’s all here; it’s all here; here, the Friendship Association has it.
Fellow Believer: (34’17–34’19 – inaudible)
The Venerable Master: Yes, as for that, in future we’ll need a large number of people; only with many people can it be done, for we don’t have the money to set up a printing press. Each of us works and contributes a hundred, or a few tens, to pool our resources; we hope many people will help out so that it can be done. There are now people taking responsibility for producing the newspaper; things are being organised in an orderly manner—this and that, here and there—it’s happening; they’ve also become more mindful of their spiritual practice, and now they’re saying, ‘Right, I won’t do that job anymore; I want to come back and help here.’ But here, through discussion, little by little, it will eventually lead to the establishment of that organisation.
Fellow Believer: (34’45 – inaudible)
The Venerable Master: Yes, of course; that’s fine; that is;
Fellow Believer: (34’56 – inaudible)
The Venerable Master: There you go, you can make a suggestion; then,
Fellow Believer: (34’59 – inaudible)
The Master: No; on this side, people have to contribute, they have to pay properly, but at a reasonable rate; there’s no loss involved. Because these are our brothers and sisters who contribute from all over the world; yes.
Fellow Believer: (34’45 – inaudible)
The Master: Therefore, everyone must make a small profit to cover labour costs; we also have to contribute to that; but the thing is, when necessary, we’ll issue a general notice to everyone; then the brothers and sisters send money back to settle everything, so nothing is lost.
Fellow Believer: Yes.
The Venerable Master: Because, to be honest, we do work very hard, but it’s just a little from each person; and skipping a meal here and there doesn’t really amount to much; yet we can still contribute, because we wish to share love and virtue and make things a little easier for everyone.
Fellow Believer: Yes. (35’40 – inaudible)
The Master: Ah; all right; if there’s anything, you should get in touch with Mr Phát Hành; he’ll (35’49 – inaudible)
Fellow Believer: Yes. (35’49 – inaudible)
The Venerable Master: They’ve just printed a lot there;
Fellow Believer: Yes.
The Master: They’ve just printed a thousand copies of this *I Seek the Way*; well, all of us are just working for a living, doing odd jobs to earn a little money so we can spread the Dharma. That is, to spread it for the benefit of others, not for any personal gain of our own;
Fellow Believer: Yes.
The Master: Because we see that this method can heal both our spiritual and physical selves; and so we dedicate it to others; we have no intention whatsoever of exploiting anyone.
Disciple: Yes.
Disciple: Master, (36’’21 – inaudible) May I now ask about physical exercise;
The Master: No; one pair; one pair; give some up front; just thirty per cent; the rest must be given in full.
The Venerable Master: Afterwards, it’s all gone; there’s none left; those who can do that, let them do so;
Disciple: (36’14–36’21 – inaudible)
The Master: No; it’s very clear, no; no; all at once; all at once; all at once.
Fellow Believer: (36’14–36’21 – inaudible)
The Master: All at once. Whoever can do that, do it, do it, do it clearly: at the front, 30 per cent; at the back, give it all. There.
Disciple: (36’50–37’09 – inaudible)
The Master: Why must it be done this way? The lighter it is, the stronger the inner power becomes.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: As for those who do it ‘whoosh, whoosh’ like that, it’s strong on the outside, but weak on the inside.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: And it’s injured—internal injuries, no less.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
The Master: Now, if you do it gently—do ten of those—then it will warm right through; ah, but mind you, pull the catfish up,
Disciple: Yes!
The Master: Pull the eel out;
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Do you see?
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Ah. Make sure you pull that loach up; it cures haemorrhoids as well.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: Many people have had success with it.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: So, when your toes are curled like this, they help to focus the mind: there are many pressure points there; it’s very useful.
Disciple: Yes, thank you, Master.
Disciple: I’ve just been reading your books, and I mentioned the issue regarding the Taoist text,
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: So I’ve come to the conclusion that your teachings are derived from Taoism and Buddhism (38’10 – inaudible)
The Master: Well, it all comes back to that; because it is simply a matter of restoring order.
Fellow Practitioner: Because there are many practices similar to the Master’s; from the ‘Soi Hồn’ practice to the ‘Pháp Luân Thường Chuyển’ (38’27–38’46 – inaudible)
The Master: That is correct.
Fellow Believer: Thank you.
Fellow devotee: (38’39 – inaudible)
The Venerable Master: That makes the teeth strong and sturdy; there are thirty-six of them.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes, Master, ladies and gentlemen, as time is limited and the Master has only five minutes remaining, if any of you have any questions or queries, please do ask.
Disciple: Yes, Master, there are many people who have been practising meditation for a long time, but they do not know how to tell whether they have attained Thanh Điển or not.
The Master: That depends on them; how long have they been practising meditation?
Fellow practitioner: There are many people who practise meditation, but they follow internal cultivation methods, or other forms of yoga;
The Master: No, that is different; with those forms of yoga, they cannot perceive it; whereas with this, through this ‘Soul Illumination’, they will eventually see the ‘Thanh Điển’ guiding them along the crown of the head, and their nature will transform, and they will find themselves becoming much more enlightened, and they will be willing to seek, inquire and accept. Only then do they perceive their own inner light: when they meet a friend who does not practise Zen, that person recognises them as a different person: their eyes are bright, and their way of thinking has changed.
Fellow practitioner: But there are also many people who practise Zen according to this method, yet they only hear the sound ‘O, o’ above their heads. So, they do not understand what that sound ‘O, o’ is, and how can they know?
The Master: “O, o” is the energy; it is at the centre of the head where “O, o” is. They must gently release it to allow it to flow, connecting with the Higher Realm. Because we are born through a current of divine energy, which enters the body of the mother, dividing into Yin and Yang, and then forms the head, torso, arms and legs; when it harmonises with the soul, only then can we be born. So now, when we return, we return to the Mâu Ni Pearl, which is the current of divine energy. Therefore, the energy we emit through the head must learn the ‘Pure Energy’ and continue that Pure Energy. When we first entered the physical body (40:35 – inaudible), it was drawn in by the pull of the mundane world and became trapped in this world; consequently, we were preoccupied only with the matters before us. Now that it has focused, it opens up; it rises, and only then does it see; then it must undergo a course of ‘Returning to the Source’. That is it. Therefore, you hear ‘I, i; o, o’—heard right here on the crown of the head; then later, you hear ‘clear, clear, clear’; then the sounds cease, the cries stop, and light appears; with your eyes closed, you see the light. It was only then that it was called ‘Thanh Điển’; at that moment, it naturally began to speak to you about Thanh Điển. Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes, and when one is ‘Illuminating the Soul’, usually the ears—if one pays attention—will hear various sounds; for example, sounds from the outside entering the ears, such as a ‘Boom, boom’.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: But if you pay close attention, there are very clear sounds; and if you pay even closer attention, there are very faint sounds, so we should pay attention,
The Venerable Master: Listen carefully to the centre of the head. When it emerges, the sound is clear, extremely clear; it’s a gentle, clear, clear, clear sound; then it gradually fades away. After a long time, even if you close your eyes and turn off the light, you can still see the light. As for the situation where, even whilst covering your ears like this, you can still hear the commotion of this world—this indicates that the Dharma Wheel has not been practised correctly: it is still weak and impure, which is why it attracts external disturbances. But once we’ve opened the Governor Vessel, if we close our eyes and cover them like this, we forget everything; we no longer remember what’s going on around us. Yet if we want to bring our awareness back, we can; and we remain fully alert at all times. That’s why they say, ‘Within delusion, there is clarity’—people call it ‘delusion’, but it’s actually very clear; there’s no delusion at all! Do you see? As for ‘deep slumber’, that is different: sitting there without knowing where one is, this and that, this and that. Then, whatever people say, one does not understand; if called, one does not even say ‘Yes!’ That is ‘deep slumber’.
Fellow practitioner: Also, there are many practitioners; for example, they wake up around 1 o’clock,
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: So they can begin Soul Contemplation,
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: Then, naturally, when that time comes, they hear a ‘O, o, o’ sound in their ears; what is that?
The Master: That is a reminder. Ah. It must be at that exact time, because it has become accustomed to it—the Falun has become accustomed to it—so at that exact time, the food and all that, this and that, the digestion (42:35—unclear), and the energy current, it, at that time, the centrifugal hour, it rises up, so that’s why it hears ‘O, o, o’; they come to remind it! So it sits up and practises. Therefore, later on, for those who have reached a certain level of cultivation, at 6 o’clock in the morning, it calls out to cool the spine; then at 12 o’clock at noon, it also feels cool, even though it’s hot outside, yet it feels cool within; then at 6 o’clock in the evening, the same; and then at midnight, it wakes up to meditate; just as if someone were reminding it. So, the way his internal organs function changes: at that exact time, they open up— —and he wakes up to meditate; he doesn’t need a clock. After all, those monks up on the mountain—they don’t have clocks, do they? They just wake up and meditate right on time. That’s it.
Fellow practitioner: Yes, I have also been practising this method, but after completing the ‘Eternal Turning Dharma Wheel’, I enter samadhi. However, after sitting for just a short while, the soles of my feet suddenly become very hot and uncomfortable. Is this due to the fact that,
The Master: That’s not right! The Dharma Wheel isn’t correct; the Dharma Wheel isn’t correct!
Disciple: But why do the heels get so hot—as hot as fire?
The Master: It’s as hot as fire because there is still evil energy within you.
Fellow Practitioner: But how can one be liberated?
The Master: To be free from it, you must practise ‘Soi Hồn’ and ‘Chiếu Minh’; lie down and breathe; hold off on sitting in meditation for now; stop sitting in meditation. Right.
Disciple: But I didn’t have this problem before; it only started after practising meditation for a while,
The Master: Because you’ve let that restlessness into yourself; your lustful nature has surfaced; what’s the big deal! Now you must lie down and practise the Dharma Wheel, to let it all dissipate, because lying in the Dharma Wheel position opens up the four limbs and cures that heat as well; do you see? So, that’s why, with that lustful nature, it becomes so stagnant.
Fellow Practitioner: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: With all due respect, Master, may I ask you a question?
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: Whilst I am practising Mindfulness Meditation, I suddenly feel as though there is a storm raging on my head;
The Venerable Master: Yes, yes.
Disciple: And my hair feels cool, as if in a storm; what is this phenomenon?
The Master: It is very precious; that is the manifestation of your inner purity emerging. Therefore, just relax and keep moving forward.
Disciple: Master, fellow practitioners say that ‘Heavenly Secrets must not be revealed’. So, Master, may I ask if they can be revealed?
The Master: Because of the saying ‘Heavenly Secrets must not be revealed’, is it? Talking about this and that now is of no benefit to those currently on the path.
Disciple: Yes.
The Master: That is why people say, ‘The Will of Heaven must not be revealed.’ Ah. So, ‘If a man practises, he attains; if a woman practises, she attains’—one practises to move forward; that is more certain. But if you hear someone say, ‘Look, it’s about to collapse!’ Isn’t that so? ‘This land is about to collapse!’ We become anxious! That is harmful to people. That is why they say ‘The Will of Heaven must not be revealed’: even if one sees something— —it is still uncertain, because the Way of Non-Action does not permit belief! When it actually happens is one thing; seeing it is another; ‘I understand, but I cannot disclose it.’ For example, take the saying, ‘The secrets of Heaven must not be revealed.’ But if they are revealed, it is a sin: it causes people to lose their minds!
Fellow practitioner: Unwarranted agitation.
The Master: Ah! Saying, ‘California is about to collapse!’ Saying that once harms people; isn’t that so? Ah! Then, in a way, if there is a Supreme Being, if there are Buddhas, they must work for the ignorant; do you see? Now, just as in this world, doctors have to work for the sick; don’t they? So they have to take care of them! Then, when that time comes, there will be a migration. Just as we flew here from Vietnam and are sitting here talking; someone has to look after us, hasn’t there? If no one looked after us, how could we have got here? Isn’t that right? Is it clear now? So, don’t believe those harmful prophecies; then sit there arguing back and forth, until you go mad; it just makes your head spin. So, you must improve yourself to move forward. Because we are the Infinite One; there is no destruction to fear! Why worry? There you go. Whatever is said, now that we’ve come here from Vietnam and seen it clearly: what is there left to worry about? Homes have been destroyed; money has run out; what is there left to worry about? I used to say, ‘Oh, in a few decades’ time, I’ll come back and enjoy that patch of land.’ Now go on and try enjoying it! (Laughs.) It’s given us a good lesson, so that we understand: we must return to our own infinite wisdom. No more worries! Isn’t that right? Since we’ve made it this far, we’ll reach our destination from here, as if by magic; it’ll be fine. Trusting in one’s own abilities is the right thing to do.
Fellow practitioner: Yes.
The Master: Don’t be sad! Many elderly people come here feeling down: “I’ve lost my home, lost my wealth! I used to have billions, now I don’t have a single penny; I borrowed ten coins from that fellow, and he shouted and screamed; oh, he insulted me!” This is an opportunity for us to practise patience; because we lack patience; we have the chance to practise patience; practise it, so that we may progress! Do you see? We’ve come here because we lack patience; otherwise, why would we have come? Without patience, we wouldn’t have dared to get off the bus and walk like this; we wouldn’t have! We must begin to practise patience.
Disciple: Yes, Master, why do I keep being drawn to the Upper, Middle and Lower Realms?
The Master: That’s the cycle of the ages.
Disciple: Yes. Well, Master, if we follow this worldly system—the years in this world—how many years does each ‘Nguơn’ span? A thousand years?
The Master: One era? Six hundred years, of course.
Fellow Believer: Six hundred years? Yes, Master, what about those who commit many sins and thus create karmic consequences?
The Venerable Master: Yes.
Disciple: Well, they are now bearing that burden,
The Master: Yes.
Disciple: Well, Master, I’ve sometimes heard that you teach that one must learn the lesson
The Master: That’s right; they must learn that lesson;
Fellow Believer: So, does that karmic consequence go hand in hand with it?
The Master: Of course it does! Because it is through learning that one realises one’s mistakes; it is because one is wrong that one corrects them; why? Going to hell means being in darkness; but now that one has corrected one’s mistakes, one is enlightened—so why would one go to hell anymore? A diligent pupil must move on to a higher class; whereas a foolish pupil must stay in a lower class. There you go; do you see? The school is quite clear; we are in school, after all.
Fellow practitioner: Yes.
Fellow believer: Yes, dear Master Tám, dear friends, during a discussion amongst our friends, some of them expressed the following views:
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: They criticised my spiritual practice as being self-centred.
The Master: Yes.
Fellow Practitioner: They said, ‘Whilst so many Vietnamese officers are suffering in re-education camps, I hoped those who left would return to liberate the country; whilst 50 million compatriots are starving and in dire straits back home, people hoped those who left would return to liberate the country. Yet now you have come over here – what promises did you make to your friends and relatives before you left? And now that you have come over here, one would think you would be thinking of the country, of those in the re-education camps; thinking of the humiliation of losing the nation; yet now you have forgotten that humiliation, forgotten that grudge, and you are only concerned with your spiritual practice! That makes you selfish; that is like crossing the bridge and then pulling up the planks, without a thought for those left behind.” So, I humbly ask Master Tam, I ask Master Tam,
The Venerable Master: On that point, you must make it clear to people that, ‘The Buddha was the same; he was just as self-centred as I am in my practice today; but by this day, everyone says, “The Buddha was right: harmony, progress, and alleviating the suffering of sentient beings.” Do you see? Now I have come here; now I wish to restore the nation! Why have I come here? Why have I left everything behind? Because there is a lack of order. Do you see? Now, as I practise this Dharma, I am re-establishing order; and one day when I return, will our people, our compatriots, choose someone who is orderly or someone who lacks order? If I sit here thinking crazy, mad thoughts, how can I return to help my homeland and build my homeland? Therefore, this practice, first and foremost, helps you to be in good health; then it restores order. Only when we have attained clarity of mind can we truly win people over, act appropriately, and use our efforts at the right moments—without engaging in unnecessary actions as we did in the past—and thus bring about restoration. Do you see? So, this method does no harm to those striving to restore the nation, does it? It causes no harm; rather, it restores order, and it brings even greater clarity, enabling us to work with greater zeal, whilst working with a way out—not working without one! It is not about sitting here in meditation and abandoning all worldly affairs, is it? There is no intention here to abandon anything. But we must re-establish order so that we can practise love, making us more worthy of sacrifice; making us more capable of working wisely; and ensuring we are no longer deceived! Do you see? Ah! So, once we are calm, we are no longer deceived, are we? Therefore, this practitioner comes out here to learn, and then returns to restore and rebuild the country so that it has order; but if we ourselves lack order, how can we possibly build order for the country?
Fellow Believer: Master Tam, we would also like to take this opportunity to ask about your stance on ‘anti-Communism’; what is it?
The Venerable Master: As for anti-Communism—the stance of opposing Communism—well, back when we were opposing Communism, where did the Communists come from? We must look for the root cause: within the very nation we lived in back then, they broke away and became Communists! Do you see? Now, if we wish to oppose Communism, what must we do? We must be more orderly and discerning, and more united; do you understand? Then the sincerity of everyone’s intentions will begin to have an impact; and those who are currently trapped—they are not entirely evil: some are evil and some are not; there are the wicked and the virtuous; and politics shows us that there are both the virtuous and the wicked; it is the people who provide the regime’s support. Do you see? Now, if we re-establish order to foster harmony across all social strata, only then will we clearly see that wisdom will triumph over all. Because we lack wisdom, even though we hold the entire world in our hands, if we squander our wisdom, we will lose it all! Therefore, we must cast aside our authoritarian and dark nature, return to harmony to attract more support and achieve victory more swiftly in that regard. Thus, the wicked will never endure. Do you see clearly now? If we harbour any ill will, we will no longer be able to practise Zen, even in the dark! Therefore, this meditation serves to manage our own bad and vicious nature, and when we return—as a person who works harder than many of the opposition, with greater clarity and agility—it brings immense benefit; that is only natural; that is ‘Victory without fighting, success comes naturally’—meaning that if everyone maintains order and unity, there is nothing difficult to understand. So, now people say, ‘Ah, I’m anti-Communist now; I can spot a Communist! How am I supposed to know who’s a Communist?” Even in Vietnam before 1975, every single cyclo driver was a Communist, and right there within the very walls of my own house there were Communists, yet I didn’t even notice! Because they were already completely embedded within our own homes! Why? They managed to infiltrate; they chose to live amidst our harmony! Now we must re-establish order; we’ll be more discerning, and then we’ll prevail; it’s not difficult at all! Therefore, we need order rather than, as we are now, making too many empty calls, rallying a crowd that lacks discipline, causing chaos—from the command level, the leadership level—and even if we want to restore order, we’ll end up bearing the blame as well!
Disciple: Master Tam, in that case, can we tell our friends, ‘We practise,
The Venerable Master: Yes,
Disciple: ‘To gain wisdom,’
The Venerable Master: Yes,
Disciple: ‘In our spiritual practice, and not because we practise merely for our own selfish gain,
The Master: Yes,
Fellow Believer: “Forgetting all those left behind.”
The Master: You cannot forget them! How could you forget? By practising love and morality, how could you forget? It is only those who, right now, are following that path of darkness—they’ve grown weary and have left! So we must save them too! And only if we are wise can we save them! Because if they come here, are we to seize them and strike them? That would be pointless; it would achieve nothing! Now, we must help them to realise their true nature and understand their responsibilities; then we will gain more friends, not more enemies! Do you see? Yes!
Disciple: Yes, thank you, Master Tam.
The Master: Yes. Thank you all as well; for coming here, and I’ve also had the opportunity to exchange ideas and learn more. We are well aware that civilisation helps us a great deal: we’ve been talking for a while now; if it weren’t for the recording, we’d forget it all by the time we got home. Later on, we can listen back to the recording of our questions and answers in detail, for further study. If there are any further queries, we’ll discuss them further next time. Thank you, everyone.
